Being induced today - dont know what to expect!

Well after thinking I was I early labour after a sweep on Wednesday turns out it just irritated me and nothing has happened since so I'm being induced today at 2pm. Had scan yesterday and baby in perfect position but just won't budge. Can anyone share their induction stories, pref the nicer ones as I am nervous and just want some reassurance as to what to expect...thanks! Oh and those that had the drip did u have an epi? A lot of people have told me to just ask for one as soon as they put me on the drip (if I need the drip) because the pain goes from 0-60 basically straight away!

If youre not dilated at all, they will probably start you off with a pessary and see how you go before they go to a drip.

Good luck! My induction didnt go to plan, so no words of advice on epidural etc, but try to stay as active as you can before you get to the drip stage. Walk around the hospital, sit upright in bed, use the birthing ball if they have one etc. it all helps.

Good luck! I was induced six weeks ago, it was fine. The pessary didn't do much so I went on the drip and the mw increased it very gradually. My labour was quick so I was fine with gas and air, if it had gone on longer I would have had an epidural - she was happy to offer me one as soon as they put the drip in so I never worried about not being able to have it if I needed it - induction contractions are more intense than normal labour, I found.

I didn't much like being monitored all the time as it was annoying, but could still walk around and I delivered on all fours - my fear was that I'd be made to lie on my back but the mw let me be in control. That was important to me.

Hope all goes well!

I was induced two weeks ago. I was given the pessary, then pretty much left to my own devices for 24 hours! Dh and I went for a looooong walk around the park next to the hospital, got some lunch in a cafe, watched a film on the ipad etc. I just had to be at my bed at set times for half an hour of monitoring. Contractions started pretty quickly, but only mildly. The midwives gave me paracetamol and codeine.

After 24 hours they examined me and I hadn't dilated, so had to have a second pessary - but I was being induced early due to pre-eclampsia, so my body wasn't ready yet.

24 hours later, another examination and I had dilated 1cm, enough for them to break my water. They then give you two hours to see how things progress, before putting you on the drip. I made my epidural request when they broke my water, so that I would be 'in the queue' and sure to get it when I needed it.

From that point things moved quickly for me, contractions came on strong and they moved me to a labour room within an hour of breaking waters.

The anaesthetist came and put in the epidural, which was wonderful, and then the drip was put in after that. Because of the epi I could feel when a contraction was happening (like a balloon being blown up in my tummy) but no pain. Dh and I went to sleep. I woke 4 hours later, the midwife examined me and said it was time to push. Ds was born an hour later, with sensation but no pain.

Personally I found the induction process long, but calm. I loved the epidural. If your hospital allows it do consider your dh staying overnight in hospital with you, mine slept on the floor and everyone else's did too, pack him some pants!

Best of luck, keep us updated with how you get on!

I was induced with my first (Sept 2012).

Was given two pessaries, dilated to 3/4cm they then broke my waters and put me on drip. Drip started at 12ish started gas and air around 3pm, got diamorphine at 5pm my ds was born at 10.03pm. No epi, no intervention.

It was a great experience. Good luck with yours.

I was induced with both DC.

First - pessary around 6 pm, pains around 2 am, baby around 10 am.

Second - pessary just after 10 am, baby around 11.30 am.

It was not a drama on either occasion. Good luck - you'll soon have that little one to snuggle!

I was induced a few weeks back

Already 3cm dilated, pessary inserted at 12noon

Lots of waiting around, and snoozing!

Waters popped at 10pm

Baby born at midnight

No tears no drugs, done and dusted in under 2 hours

Good luck, you might not need it though Wink

I got induced six weeks ago. Pessary in at 11am, contractions started after lunch, established labour by 7.30pm, baby arrived just after 11pm with no interventions apart from episiotomy but that was because he was gigantic with a massive head. I knew this and didn't want to risk tearing - nothing to do with the induction. I only had gas and air for the stitches.

It was so much better than my previous non-induced labour.

EATmum · 24/05/2014 11:33

Induced with first DD, nearly 13 years ago. I'd definitely recommend an epidural if you need one - as I did when they had had me on the drip for a while. The 'rest' and respite that gave me was, I'm sure, helpful when it came to the pushing stage later. And I'd had lots of scare stories before the induction, and it was really OK. Good luck OP and keep us posted.

My last two babies were induced. The pessary made me feel like I'd been kicked down below but softened things up to allow them to break my waters. The drip was pretty intense but I coped both times just with gas & air. Good luck!

DoItTooJulia · 24/05/2014 11:51

It took aaaages for me.

4 days on the induction ward before I was moved around to delivery suite. Lots of waiting around, pessaries, sweeps, monitoring.

Once they could pop my waters (9am) it all happened pretty quickly. Drip started at 10 am, had to be increased to the maximum, baby born at 4 pm. Fine on gas and air, no interventions and no damage to me or baby.

Good luck OP.

Update!

Firstly thank u for responding, u gave me some real reassurance! In the end I had the pessary inserted and 5 hrs later labour began. I was then admitted to hospital to have my waters broke and after that contractions started like mad. The induction sped up the contractions and the pain so ended up with an epidural after trying the birthing pool and gas and air.

My contractions were never regular enough so I eventually went on the drip which got me to pushing stage. Managed to push him pretty far down but he's a big boy so ended up with forceps delivery which went really well. Small cut and only a bit of pain. The team said they were impressed with my pushing esp under an epi as I was close to an emergency section so I'm really pleased. Not that there's anything wrong with a section, at the time I wanted one just to have it all over with lol, but recovery wise I'm glad.

Anyway sorry for the waffle, I now have my beautiful 9.13 baby boy! He's 56cm long and considering I'm only 5'3 everyone was a little shocked at his size. He's great thou and def worth the pain :)

Thanks again for your support, wishing u all good luck for any pending labours x
