I'm so sorry but I have another urgent grizzly question!

Hi all,

Just after DS I posted on here and got some fantastic advice which worked and I'm back for more.

Had a third degree tear when I gave birth two weeks ago, apparently DS just came out too quickly at the end. Everything has been painful but ok since (once I got past the poo situation) but yesterday the pain became excruciating. I'm taking paracetamol and voltarol plus using my witch hazel pads but I feel like I'm on fire down there, more towards the back end than the front- sorry, I warned you it was grizzly!!

I had a quick look in the mirror and it's quite red-much more so than when I checked a few days ago and I'm getting a sort of mucusy discharge.

What should I do?

I got an infection just after I had my son because I had a piece of membrane still up there. I knew straight away though because I stunk and the discharge was disgusting. As soon as I started taking the antibiotics the membrane came out and it started to clear up and the only problem I had then was that my stitches stung like a bitch if I peed on them so I started to lean forward when weeing to avoid it getting on the stitches.

If you're not sure just see the doctor and ask them to have a look. If it doesn't look right they'll probably take a swab and prescribe antibiotics but I suspect it's probably normal pain and stuff for a third degree tear.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

You need to have it looked at I'm afraid. 3rd degree tears have a much greater chance of infection due to how close they are to bowel content and any infection risks delayed healing and wound breakdown so is much better dealt with promptly. The best way to be seen for this at the weekend is usually back on your postnatal ward and most will still see you within 2 weeks of delivery. If they won't see you there push them on it with it being a weekend and they'll probably speak to their doctor on call and organise for you to be seen somewhere in the hospital today. It'll probably just be a case of a week of a couple of different types of antibiotics but they'll need to take a look at it to make sure there's nothing else wrong. Good luck!

I had a third degree after birth of dd1 3 years ago. It got infected and I needed a second set of antibiotics to clear it. I would visit the doc if I was you. I started to get more normal feeling down there around 6 weeks. Well done for being brave enough to look! It took me months to get the courage up!

Doctors I think for you. I had one almost three months ago now and the pain did get worse before it got better, especially once I started doing a bit more, but the discharge needs to be checked out.

Infection or not, do take it as easy as you can as they take a while to heal. I'm still very sore if I push myself or if in in my feet for too long. Just realised its the weekend, call out of hours - or can you go back to labour ward still - mine said you can be seen anytime in the first month as you're still under their care. Might be worth giving them a call.

Hope you feel better soon

Saw out of hours gp at hospital, infection confirmed :( probable UTI confirmed too (I am prone to these though). Got another course of antibiotics to take and told to try a salt bath. Will this really hurt? Not brave enough to try that yet!
