Secur, i know for my first baby I wasn't told either. I found out by accident when pg with number 2.

I had a short labour with DS2 and - guess what - yes, a trip to the operating theatre for manual removal of placenta. Determined to have physiological third stage this time.

I had a short labour with dd (my third), baby and placenta came more or less together accompanied by a fairly large blood loss. For the record I was never given a choice with regard to the injection although my eldest was born nearly 16 years ago (and you weren't given a lot of info about anything) and placentas for both the others came pretty quickly, within 10 minutes.

I had a 4.5 hour 1st labour, and my placenta took just under 20 minutes to deliver. I had a jab (can't remember being consulted about that) and it was amidst loads of uncomfortable tugging by the midwife. ('Till I told her to 'LEAVE IT!'
I'm having a homebirth this time, and I've spoken with my midwife about it, and we're going to go with breastfeeding rather than a jab this time. I breastfed last time, and she doesn't feel the procedures they used to remove the placenta were warranted in my case, but more down to the hospitals policy.

with my 2nd labour I had a very short second stage (5 minutes - not sure, it was an unassisted one so there wasn't anything in my notes) and and equally fast, and obviously natural, 3rd stage.
My other labours don't compare - had very long 2nd stage first time round and with my third I had a managed 3rd stage.
2under2 here - finally changed my nickname!

As a rule of thumb we are happy to wait up to 2 hours - the longest we have waited has been 1hour 20 min so far. The AIMS book I sent you a link for may have a reference for length of physiological third stage.
