Elective c sect 2nd time round

Tigerlily09 · 07/04/2014 21:20

I had an emergency c sect first time round after 36hrs of labour as my baby got stuck, petrified of natural birth and many complications that came with it.

Question is will I be allowed a c sect again? Due to previous and emotional trauma...

Just had to stop by as that's exactly what happened with me. Induction 3 days 10 cms epidural forceps back to back ending in c section. I'm wondering if it'll be straight to c section this time??

Depends on your hospital policy but I was allowed elcs for no medical reason other than previous section.

IMissSleep · 08/04/2014 07:07

Ive been granted another section for having previously had a section. Sometimes the consultants can refuse (so say the midwifes) but I've never heard of anyone getting told no.

They may just book you closer to your due date to see if u labour naturally. Mine is booked for 39+4
Next week Shock

I was similar - 41 hour labour, excrutiating (sp?) internals and ended in emcs (no forceps tried as only 9cm plus I didn't give consent for them).

I had a debrief (my request) last week and have an elcs agreed, in writing for when/if I have dc2.

I was expecting a battle and went prepared with the NICE guidelines but never needed them.

We went through my notes and I said I wanted a note in my records to say I can have an elcs next time and it was agreed immediately.

Can you ask your GP to write to the hospital to get you a debrief?

You SHOULD be able to. The NICE guidelines say that your preference following a previous CS should be fully taken into consideration, plus they also are very supportive of women requesting a CS on the grounds of mental health.

In reality how you are actually treated it is more dependent on the hospital you are at. Policies vary enormously between Trusts and they are not obliged to follow NICE's recommendations.

In some places you will be granted one very easily. In others they are much more resistant and push VBACs more strongly. Though in the end, very few will say no outright if you really want a CS.

If your grounds are on the basis of a traumatic past experience, flagging this sooner rather than later might be advisable as it will add weight to your case.

I ended up with an EMCS last time too after 48hrs in induced labour where I failed to get past 6cm resulting in a very distressed DS. At my booking appointment the MW prepared me for the fact that I might have to fight for an ELCS and I'd have to put my foot down and stick to my guns. It was the complete opposite when I met the consultant! He mentioned VBAC once, I said no and that was it! Meeting him again tomorrow to get the date Smile like others have said, arm yourself with the NICE guidelines and prepare to stand your ground, ultimately they won't refuse it
