Baby lying 'back t o back', how can I help it turn round

Has midwife appointment today and been told that baby is lying 'back to back'. That explains the very bad backache. I have a feeling it happened about 10 days ago, I felt a huge movement from the baby and the next day my back was agony and hasn't stopped hurting since.

I am 36wks and feeling quite nervous about my VBAC now she said I would be in for a long and difficult labour .

I had a 36hr labour and emergency section with dd, so not feeling great the VBAC anymore!!

Anyone got any advice on how I can help this LO turn round the right way???

DD was back to back with me but we didn't dicover this until the last scan, about a month before she was born! Had a few probs during my pregnancy so was always being scanned. Luckily she turned during labour, but not until it was in advanced stages. Unfortunately it was quite painful and the midwife told me it was worse than a 'straight up' baby, but I have nothing to compare it too!

I know this is an old thread, but thought I would re post here.

I think my baby is laying back to back (she was at my last MW appointment), I am 39+5. I feel all her movement across the front of my bump and tickling at my pubic bone on each side. I have also been experiencing a lot of pressure in my rectum....Blush- I am not constipated and am infact experiencing more frequent bowel movement due to this pressure.

I have been doing a lot of 'all fours' and laying over my birth ball whilst watching tv, but from the symtoms I have listed above do you think my baby is still 'back to back'??

Trying not to stress about it, but really don't want it to delay the onset of labour...

I spent plenty of my pregnancy with DS1 on the birthing ball and on lhs,my entire labour on all fours and DS1 still came out back to back! I'm afraid I'm not sure about the signs as no-one had any idea until he emerged.

I know this sounds hopelessly negative but on the plus side I have since had DS2, who was the right way round and the labour was exactly the same. I had been expecting it to be totally different and less painful so I was a bit disappointed but I hope it's reassuring for anyone else with a back to back baby.

Things I found helpful during the back to back labour were staying active, keeping off my back (DP said he had never seen me give such an evil look as I did to a MW who made me lie on my back for monitoring) and staying at home as long as possible (should have been a homebirth but was ambulanced in for separate issue).

Good luck Smile

Best thing to do is have a good read of the Spinning babies site.
www.spinningbabies.com/baby-positions/posterior
There's loads on there about how to tell if your baby is posterior. (You can sometimes tell by looking at the bump, the area around the belly button looks flattened or dipped in rather than rounded.
Loads of exercises on there to try in pregnancy to shift baby and also for labour.
Good to show your partner/birth partners too so they can help you with them.

Thank's Selina, I have researched on Spinning Babies website.

LadyPelvicFloorsOfSteel- Just out of interest were you much overdue when you went into labour with your 'back to back' baby? Ta!

LadyPelvicFloorsOfSteel · 28/04/2011 23:13

Two weeks early so we bucked a lot of trends! I did a bit of overenthusiastic gardening (mainly pulling weeds so in theory perfect for positioning) and went into labour the next morning.

Selina - interesting about the bellybutton as I never got an outy with DS1 but did with DS2, I think the signs probably would have been there if I'd known what to look for.

Leilababyno1 · 28/04/2011 23:46

Wow, thanks LadyPelvicFloorsOfSteel- that's very reasurring. Though think I've missed the boat on her coming early, unless I wake up in labour tomorrow morning...Grin- doubt it!

Definitely have got an outy, so not sure if that clue is accurate for me- although baby is suppose to be on the large side, so maybe that's why. Who knows maybe she isn't posterior anymore...to be on the safe side I will carry on with the non slouching, forward sitting postures though.

Just scanned this so am sorry of repeating. I had back to back baby and was so painful so just keep an open mind on the drugs as i ended up with epidural etc and dont be fobbed off if they say oh its not painful.
Im having a c section in 4 weeks dues to it and the consultant said back to back was a hard birth....
