has anyone had a baby at 7 months?
My sis-in-law might have to have a caesarian today due to heavy bleeding and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience?

Oh no. Sorry I personally have no experience. But, my DH's brother's wife had one of there kids around this time. He was very small and they thought he wouldn't survive. But, today he is a perfectly normal healthy 10 year old.

My SIL had twins at 28 weeks, and apart from a few weeks stay in SCBU just to keep an eye on them, they were fine. They're now nearly 10, and have had no health problems related to their early arrival. I hope all goes well for your family.

wheresmyfroggy · 18/08/2006 13:15

Our nephew was born at 28 weeks, he was in scbu for 10 weeks and is now a happy , healthy 4 year old. [he has slight hearing impairment which is possibly related to prematurity]

Jahan · 18/08/2006 13:31

Thanks. Its been quite stressful for the family but Drs have assured that baby should be ok and will only perform c-section if they think the baby gets into difficulty.

Oh, that sounds pretty good. DH's nephew was born at like 23 weeks or something. BIL told me he could hold him in the palm of his hand (one hand).

I think 32 weeks is quite far along really. Very promising. It's not ideal of course, but it isn't too bad.

QueenEagle · 18/08/2006 14:06

sil had dd at 31 weeks after collapsing due to eclampsia. All the signs were missed by her MW - protein in urine, really swollen face and fingers. Next day she collapsed with convulsions and was rushed in for an emergency CS which saved her life and that of my niece.

Baby was 2lb 13oz at birth and stayed in SCBU for 2 months til she was around 4lb+.Although still small, she is now a very happy and healthy 2 year old.

NewLP · 18/08/2006 14:22

My DS was born at 34 wks ? C section due to retarded growth ? (had suffered an in vitro death at 33 wks with prev preg a year earlier, so they kept a very close eye on this one) ? was 5lb 4oz ? brilliant weight, but I did have borderline GD through out the pregnancy, so probably why he was so big!! ? 10 day stay in SCBU ? no probs ? now a very health 4 year old.
BTW: the girl in the next bed to me had her section half an hour before me ? same number of weeks along, same problem as me AND had suffered the same problem as me the year before!! Spooky. Anyway, she had a girl ? 2lb something ? had a longer stay in SCBU, but went home safe, healthy and happy.
SIL had her baby about 9 weeks after I had DS ? wasn?t due until December!! Think she was 23 or 24 weeks. Long stay in SCBU, but other wise a normal healthy 4 year old that just loves getting up to mischief with her cousin (my DS).

3 happy endings from one post ? can?t get much more hope than that I guess

Hi Jahan

I bled heavily at 27 weeks and was admitted to hospital. There was talk of delivering my dd then, but luckily the bleeding settled down and they finally delivered her at 36 weeks. She was still quite small, even then, but healthy. She couldn't feed by herself and had to be tube fed, she also needed to be kept warm for a while (not in an incubator, but they put her on a heated mat), but otherwise was fine. I was given steroids (from the bleed at 27 weeks onwards) to help develop the baby's lungs, in case she needed to be born early. The nurses in SCBU told me that they make a huge difference to survival in very prem babies - even just one dose. The steroids I had were called dexamethosone (sp?). DD is now a perfectly healthy and average-sized 6 year old. Good luck.

I was 7 months when I had dd4 and will probably be about the same this time hopefully later.

DD4 was 4lb9oz and in special care for 3 weeks, fed through a tube and then onto breast which took a while. A few scary complications but she is now 3 and a huge healthy lovely girl. Had my twins at 7.5 months and they were home within a week!!!!
If its at all possible they should let her look around the special care unit. Makes it a little less scary for when and if her baby goes in there.

Fingers and toes crossed for her and baby. Keep us posted xxxx

DD was born at 34 weeks she was 4lb 11oz and had to be fed by tube for the first week, she wasn't a bad weight but all the way through my pregnancy I was riddled with bladder infections and so I kept going into hospital as the UTI's kept giving me contractions and so I kept thinking I was going to have her first at 27 weeks and then again at 30 weeks. It was another UTI that brought her on at 34 weeks.

I too was given steroids to help mature the lungs.

One thing I would like to ask of all the ladies who were given steroids, does your child now suffer with asthma? I am convinced that their is a link between asthma and steroids given to mothers whilst pregnant.

NewLP · 18/08/2006 16:16

Crazydaisy:

Oh- Steroids ? yes forgot about that bit ? I was given one dose the day before delivery. They were going to do a 2nd on the day he was delivered but as he was showing distress (heart rate dropped below 95), they decided not to do anything more but get him out asap.

No asthma or other breathing complications here.

Tube feeding ? forgot that bit too (what am I like!!) ? only tube fed for 2 days then straight to breast. Fantastic eater then and now.

Good luck to your friend Jahan.

Hi,
My dd (3weeks old) was born at 32+5. She weighed 3lb 12ozs. She came home after 3 weeks in hospital & now weighs a healthy 4lb 13ozs.
My ds2 was born at 34 weeks. He weighed 4lb 14ozs & is now a very big, strapping 2 year old.
Hope this helps for you.
Wishing them luck xxx

HellKat · 18/08/2006 16:22

Crazy- I had steroids with both ds2 & dd. Ds2 shows no signs of asthma, nor does dd (yet). Fingers crossed they wont.

Feeding through the tube is so easy once you've mastered it. The only thing I found daunting both last time & this time, is you forget just how diddy they are, especially when it comes to changing their clothes in an enclosed incubator.

daisy1999 · 18/08/2006 16:23

my twin dds were born at 32 weeks. they were in scbu for 5weeks whilst they put on a bit of weight but are perfectly healthy and gorgeous. I had the steroid injection. no breathing problems and no asthma.

crazydazy · 18/08/2006 19:18

I had steroids in both pregnancies and both my children have always had mild asthma, trouble with coughs, colds etc, mind you I didn't breastfeed so this could be part of the problem why.

DD is 6 now and has just started growing out of the coughs but she used to get them really bad when she was 18 months to 5 years.

LaDiDaDi · 18/08/2006 20:47

My dd was born at 32+ weeks and is now 14weeks old. I suddenly became very unwell with preeclampsia. I had one lot of steroids pre delivery but too close to help her lungs. My dd neededCPAP breathing support for 4 days and had a PDA which is a heart problem related to prematurity but which was successfuly treated with drugs. Her birthweight was 1.35kg and she came home tube feeding after 4 weeks weighing 1.89kg. She weighed 4.24kg today and is doing really well.
Hope all goes well for your sil. Thinking of her xx

I went into labour with ds at 33 weeks - my waters just broke, I don't think there was any reason, even though he has spina bifida! I had steroids when I first got in to the hospital, and he was born by emergency c-section the next day. He was a big boy for his dates - 5lb5ozs, and apparantly he was too strong, so he blew a lung! But the upshot is, that even with all of his complications, and the need to have surgery on his back at 5 days old, he was absolutely fine in 3 weeks, at home, and keeping me up at all hours constantly breast feeding, just like any other baby! He's 2 now, and a right little tinker, he's had no effects of his prematurity. So it's not all bad news when a baby comes early - they are little fighters! Good luck to your sister-in-law.
