What do you think is the chance of a midwife giving a sweep pre-edd?

Am 38+3 tomorrow and uncomfortable/sore/sick/whinge-bagging. Will she refuse until I'm overdue?

probably, sorry

I had a sweep at 39 weeks last time because I'd developed PEP which is thought to be an allergic reaction to something that happens in late pregnancy. However, m/w did say it would be rare for it to work before due date and main reason was to get me just dilated enough so they could break my waters artificially to induce.

I should also point out that it's bl*^dy painful!

I had a sweep in my first pregnancy when I was 40+4. TBH wasn't that painful but be prepared for bleeding. If your cervix isn't ready then yes, it will hurt. I'm now 39 weeks into 2nd pregnancy and see mw tomorrow when I will ask her to check me and do a sweep. She'll probably refuse but like you, am in pain with hips and can't get sleep. Fingers crossed!

I had a sweep at 38wks with ds2 and one at 39wks with dd. Both were expected to be big babies and there was a history of shoulder dystocia so there was a medical reason. Neither sweep worked and it was so horrible that I wouldn't want one if I ever became pregnant again.

If you can possibly avoid it I would stick it out. I don't think they'd do it anyway unless there was a medical reason.

i had sweep at 40 + 6 or 7

My mw attempted one at 39+5 as I had been awake for 2 days constantly with painful Braxtons every 10 mins. MW assumed that I was 'close' and said that since I was near my due date she would do it. Turns out that she couldn't really do it as my cervix was high etc. She said she would have a 'wiggle about' to see if it got hormones going but couldn't really do a proper sweep. She told me I was 'weeks off'.

Anyway, had a huge, very bloody show 12 hours later and DS was born 36 hours later. So maybe a rummage might help!

Try sex - more pleasant than a midwife 'rummaging'! And shown to be effective too!

My consultant was happy to try with DD when I was 39 +2 as I was huge and fed up, and DD was already (by scans) on the large side. Alas my cervix wasn't anywhere near ripe and she had a forage but couldn't sweep. Tried again a week later but no change. DD eventually induced and born by CS.

I would ask, nothing venture, nothing gained!!

with both pregancies asked midwife if i had not delivered by due dat would they sweep me as i too was very big with both. they agreed to sweep on due day, however both born couple days before. think it may depend on how your midwife feels about it. but it will only work if you are ready

alexsmilitantmum · 08/08/2006 19:56

had a sweep and 40 +10 and it worked immediatelybut obviously very late and already dilated 3 cm.
didn't hurt-just a bit like a smear test-not nice but not excruciating.
