Thats pretty much it really........... I had a horrible tear with DS was very close to being whipped into theatre for some reconstructive work 'down below'.

Am now expecting baby2 was wondering if its likley to happen again or is there a chance i could not tear at all?

None of my dr's/midwifes have mentioned it so far, but people have told me of ladies who have had one bad tear then nothing at all the next time.

well I had an epesiotimy (wrong spelling, but I hope you know what I mean!), with my first, tore really badly with my second (second degree, verging on third)[ouch emoticon], and then with no's#3, 4 & 5 didn't tear, not even a scratch!!!!
(and my third was born with her hand on her head weighing 8lb). guess i must now be coined 'bucket'.

USAUKMum · 04/08/2006 20:14

Yes there is a chance you won't tear.

A close friend tore badly with DS 9 lb 3 oz, required theatre, with DD 9lb 14 oz (!!!!!!) not even a graze. Then another close friend had a 3rd degree with DD1, and a graze with DD2.

With me I had a small tear with DD1, nothing with DS1 (stillborn in 2nd trimester) and a 2nd degree with DS2 but he was induced at 38wks and was born in 20 min consultant said there was no time for head to "shape" itself in the birth canal.

I have to add tho....with babys 3,4 &5 I massaged my periniom with vit oil, on advice from my midwife. plus I had wonderful midwives helping me control the pushing so as not to come out too fast (IYKWIM?).

with each of them bar no#1 I went from 5 - 10cms in less than 10mins (baby#5 was 4 - 10cm and out in 10mins)...and still only tore with no#2.

going on that, the massaging helped, and DH enjoyed helping too.

sorry if TMI tho!!

Me. Episiotomy and tore right through to back passage on first.
Episiotomy on second but only small requiring 4 stitches. Healed quickly and no problem at all.
3rd baby - no episiotomy and no tears.
So I'd say there's a good chance you could come through without a tear.

Charlee · 04/08/2006 20:21

thanks for your replys.

DS was 6lb 13oz and there saying this baby is big, also......... tmi alert!

Even after 22 months which is when DS was born i still feel a little tender in that area on the periniom, nothing majorly painfull but it makes me wice so im just worrying incase its weak from last time.

1st 7lb 13oz
2nd 6lb 15oz
3rd 8lb 5oz
So a bigger baby doesn't mean more problems.

psychomum5 · 04/08/2006 20:30

well I had

no#1 - 8lb 8oz (episiotomy)
no#2 - 8lb 10oz (second degree tear)
no#3 - 8lb (no tear, nothing, and she had hand on head like I said)
no#4 - 7lb 2oz (nothing)
no#5 - 7lb 14oz (nothing)

one of my friends had an episiotomy with her first, who was 7lb something, and then nothing which each of her others. she has four, and they each got bigger by a pound per baby. her secong being 8lb 1oz(i know cos we gave birth within days to her second and my third and they were an oz different), her third was 9lb 11oz, and her fourth was 10lb 15oz[ouch!!!] and she didn't even graze. made for many comments I can tell you.

she isn't going for no#5 tho....on the basis that it would be a 12lber and she is not birthing a turkey(her words, xmas for her normally means a 12lb turkey....you can get her meaning)

DS was 6lb 1oz, I tore quite badly (2nd degree) had a PPH and needed sewing up in theatre.

DD was 7lb 11oz, I had only a graze and didn't need any stitches .

Charlee · 04/08/2006 20:33

phew so i may be saved after all!

I have heard many people say the massaging with oil thing is good i may give it a go, any oil in particular?

try wheatgerm oil - you can get it in the Bodyshop as a base oil.

Charlee · 04/08/2006 20:45

DD1 6lbs 3 ozs second degree tear loads of stitches, she had her hand by her face though

DD2 9lbs 3 ozs no tear at all. MW said she could see the tear starting to go and supported this area, was a homebirth too. She also made me wait a while once the head was out and guided the head out too compared to DD1 who shot out in one go. I would put something about it in your birthplan, my MWs knew my concerns from last time.

LaidbackinAsia · 06/08/2006 16:11

Hello, thanks for your link Toady - it has given me a bit more confidence. This issue is something that has been on my mind. My DS1 was 8lb 4oz and born in hospital. Had a small tear - no stitches. DS2 born at home - 10lb 4oz and shoulder dystocia, had third degree tear - had to go to hospial (much to my annoyance) to be stitched under spinal. Healed well. Now pregnant with 3rd. Really don't fancy a cesearean - living in Sri Lanka and unclear about how things are done here - but know there is a high incidence of maternal fistula !! Grim.

tegan · 06/08/2006 16:18

Just to let you know that I had a 3rd degree tear with dd1 as she was back to back and then dd2 was perfect and I had a 2nd degree which was fine. Don't worry

yana04 · 09/08/2006 23:25
