Being induced - is it really that bad ??

Being induced and wondering if it as bad as the stories I have been told ?

Apparently it will be very drawn out , painful etc that usual .

My dd was born within 5 hours so quite fast, I am quite scared of the thought of it being a very long process.

I am already 1-2cm and indefinitely want to have an epidural again but I'm curious as to what stage they would allow me to have this ?

I had one really good induction followed by the worst induction ever!

I think when that baby is ready it's ready and no amount of intervention can change that (without a CS obvs)

ra88 good luck! It's weird knowing when your going in isn't it. Feel like I have no excuse to not be prepared/ leave a messy house etc.

BOth my boys were induced, but for different reasons and were quite different experiences.

DS1 - went 2 weeks over, I went in on the Sunday night, had the first pessary at around 9:30pm. Cervix was tight as anything.
Next pessary around 8:30am; periodic checking, had a sweep (not great!) and then another pessary at around 3:30. Unusual to have 3, I believe - but it worked for me as things started to kick off more after that one, with more period-pain contractions. I'd been completely unhungry all day, and after eating some lunch, was sick - no one had warned me that contractions could bring on sickness!
Anyway. Progress was slow, I reached 2 whole cm dilated but by then was crawling round my bed (I don't take well to period pains) and begged to be taken up to labour ward, which I was at around 9:30pm. Was wheelchaired everywhere by then as just couldn't stand up, let alone walk. Went to the loo about 5 times (my usual thing with period pains is to go to the loo as somehow the pushing motion helps with the pains) - so cleared my bowels out completely, AND my waters broke down the loo - big whoosh! and splash, I worried that the baby had come out too! (No such luck)
By 11:30pm, dilation was back to 1cm, I was begging for some pain relief but not an epidural (bad back issues) so they gave me pethidine, which did, IMO, SFA. Also an anti-emetic to stop me being sick (which worked!)
They said, because they were busy, that they'd give me another 4h and then check and if I hadn't progressed by then, I'd get the drip.

Didn't need it - stage 2 started around 1:30am and by 2:03am, DS1 was born, nearly without a MW as I sent DH to fetch one when I felt DS1 crowning and he was born next push.

DS2 - far more complex but mostly not relevant because I had various other things going on - done at 39w, I had polyhydramnios, DS2 was unstable oblique transverse lie (diagonal, with his head up under my ribs, but kept moving around) so needed far more intervention which, as I say, wouldn't be relevant to you. :)

VDB- yes definitely feel like we have no excuse to not be ready and tidied up now . I didn't want to be induced but I do feel slight relief knowing when I'm going in and that dd is all sorted !

I was induced by the drip and had no pain relief at all. It was horrific. I would advise you to seriously ensure you have pain relief if induced with the drip. It was put in at 1pm and my baby was born just before 5pm so it was quick but didn't feel that way at the time.

I was induced at 40+10 24 hrs after my hind waters broke and things weren't really progressing. I was put on the drip and given an epidural pretty much straight away. It took quite a while as baby's heart rate dropped every time they increased the drip, so there were some scary moments. But overall it was fine, I managed to doze during the contractions and save my energy for pushing. I see it as a positive experience even if it was very much not the more natural birth I'd have liked. Good luck and hope it goes well!

I was induced this Tuesday at 39+5 due to gestational diabetes. Baby was only measuring small (estimated weight 6 pounds 5 ounces and he came out at 6 pounds 7 ounces) but my blood sugar numbers were all over the place, hence the decision to induce.

Midwife broke my waters at 10am, and we sat/walked/bounced on the ball until 4pm, but absolutely nothing was happening, so we started the drip. Midwife started with a tiny dose and only raised the dose once and baby was born five hours later.

Having had a natural first birth, I felt that the contractions were more intense this time on the drip. I opted not to have pain medication, and was okay-ish, but I was definitely noisier in labour the second time round. Anyway, I had no tearing or stitches, and feel absolutely right as rain a few days later, so please add this to the pile of positive induction stories.

Congratulations! Mine wasn't great (contractions every 2 minutes for 30 hours only 4cm dilated) so ended in caesarean but baby was 10 lb 4oz so unsurprising!!

StillPukin · 06/02/2014 09:52

Wow MrsVDB it sounds like you had a really tough time, but congratulations on your new arrival, hope you're recovering well Flowers
