hiya, i had a long labour.I had pethidine twice and my epidural topped up 4 times. I also had to have a c-section as C had no intention of coming and was getting very distressed. When i was in theatre i also had something else as i could feel each time they touched me down the one side!!?? This may also have been epidural??
Im now getting to the point....can epidurals cause long term back pain? C is now 14 months and my bad is killing me where i had the epidural.

My epidural point hurt for years! I don't know if officially that is one of the side effects, but it certainly affected me.

i have heard that a possible side effect of having epidural is back pain .. probably from not inserting the huge needle in exactly the right place .. i read it in one of those pregnancy and birth books the midwife provides

I had epidural and do get back ache sometimes now which I never had pre pregnancy. I do remember one of my anti natal classes being told - Mothers blame epidurals for back pain but its never the epidural that gives the back pain but its actually their own fault caused by carrying heavy things like car seats etc after the birth. She was a bit of an old crow right enought. But yes I believe mine cames from having the epidural especially since he messed up the first attempt.

I don't have back pain as such but ever since having DD is suffer with back ache's a hell of alot more often than i used to and I had an epidural with her. Have heard it is quite common

teabelly · 01/08/2006 13:48

I had an epidural with DS (4) but the only recuring back pain I get is from trying to carry the box containing his cot upstairs at 6mths pg and very impatient . Have since had a DD and not one bit of related back pain. But I have a friend who had an epidural with her first and constantly suffers back ache ever since, so I think it must depend on the anethetist (sp?) and how still inbetween excrutiating contractions you can be whilst they insert the needle.

I had 2 epidurals when they were relatively new (70's) - I didn't/haven't had an ounce of trouble with my back or any possible related side effects that I know of!

Yes i have had none stop trouble since having DD1. It really got bad after having DD2 even though I didn't have an epidural with her. I get like a pulsating pain where my epidural was and if I lay on my back, i get a painful weakness there and I am unable to sit myself up and instead have to roll to one side and get up...sometimes it hurts so badly that DH has to push me to one side as I cant bear to do it.

A friend of mine has also had quite alot of trouble and has been left with constant headaches. The doctor has finally admitted that the epidural is probably to blame as it's all to do with the nerves.

monkey2 · 01/08/2006 15:29

Hiya teabelly, im always lifting things before and after pregnancy! Its quicker to do it yourself!!! I know i didnt sit still though when he was putting it in because he got quite huffy. What do they expect when you have an 8lb 4oz
baby trying to get out!

DH is always having a go at me for not waiting, but I'm just a big child and want things done now !!

If the thought of more needles doesn't make you shiver have you thought about maybe accupuncture, or massage of some sort?? Another friend had real bad SPD/PSD?? with her DD and regular treatments made a massive difference for her - could maybe also help with back pain...?

monkey2 · 02/08/2006 15:28

Hiya Teabelly, i think after my 1stand only labour i would try anything. Doc thinks i might have started the menopause!! at 30 so that could have something to do with it as well. We will see.

yes, the doctor doing it told me it was a possible side effect. Along with headaches.

teabelly · 03/08/2006 10:46

Blimey Monkey that's very early Well if it is then maybe some of the medication normally prescribed will help your back pain.
