Using menstrual cup after birth?

Does anyone else normally use a menstrual cup? I understand most brands have a size for after birth, but how long after birth happens is it comfortable/possible to use one? I reckon I'll be using pads for a while but I do love my FemmeCup and I'll miss it!

I don't use one, but trust me, there is likely to be a LOT of blood for quite some time.

Also handy to have pad to drop some witch hazel on to sooth your bits.

IIRC u shouldn't use tampons or cups until 4 weeks or so after birth because of infection risk. I didn't want ANYTHING anywhere near there for a while it's amazing I'm PG again tbh Grin

I used pads for post birth lochia, then when my periods resumed six months later I used my mooncup again. I think best not to use it until you feel completely healed, midwife can probably advise you better though. I hate pads but I would have worried about infection and leaking from a cup post birth.

Not an option for post-birth lochia, I'm afraid. It is likely to be anything from uncomfortable to impossible to insert after a vaginal birth, depending on whether you tear or need an episiotomy. Then as pp have said there is the infection risk.

Pads are more comfortable after birth as they cushion your perineum, which for me was very painful and felt very vulnerable. You'll be fine to go back to cups once your period returns.

Yes, it's recommended not to because of the infection risk. Same with a loss.

However, I do wonder about that (devil's advocate here) - I mean, what if you have an ELCS and never go into labour so nothing dilated? Wouldn't it be the same as a normal period then, or am I missing something relevant?

I can't even dilate as I have a permanent stitch holding things shut!

The moon cup has two sizes (A and B I think), one size is for woman who have had a baby already...I bought the wrong one but it was fine, I am assuming that until my poor pelvic floor is fully repaired again that I will have to buy another in the correct size. I guess that the femme cup might have two sizes too?

Thanks for the info ladies.... I don't think the femme cup has two sizes actually but I could be wrong. Sounds like it's as I expected, the initial post-pregnancy bleed will be all pads but with normal periods can hopefully come normal use of a cup
