Just wondered if any one else has had this? I had a double lobed placenta after having my son in 2010 and have never heard of ne1 else having this. (obviously i've googled it and know what the medical staff told me at the time) but just wondered what you were told. Wink

What is it??

Basically a normal placenta is made up of one huge mass (lobe) in my case when i had my son it was 2 huge masses (2 lobes.. 2 placentas)
I was told it was extremely rare and most probably in early pregnancy (before 12 week scan) i was probably having twins but in most cases the embryo and placenta both get re absorbed but for sum reason the placenta continued.. Also told its even rarer for 1 twin to survive when 1 has failed when identical twins were conceived.

Just wondered if ne1 else had had a double lobed placenta aswell as google only tells u so much!!

I had this with DC2, born last week. I was told it is a succureant lobe, or something like that.... I asked the midwife to write it down so i could google it later not had time to yet. From what midwife said it is rare and she was quite interested in it.

Yeah mine was like the show piece when i gave birth, even more so as it was retained so i had a theatre full of ppl looking at it.
Wish they had told me more at the time... I'm only interested now as I had MMC last week so want to see if there is a genetic reason it happened as they were pretty sure in my case i'd lost a twin.

Congratulations on your new arrival, ur doing well getting time to get on MN!! Grin

Hi
I had this type of placenta, gave birth to son 3 weeks ago...had ELCS due to maternal request, plus he was breech as well.

Doctor said it was a succenturiate lobe (also had a velamentous insertion)...basically I'd have been more likely to have retained placenta, post partum haemorrhage and infection if I'd had a VB.

It wasn't picked up on any ante natal scans- first I'd heard of the accessory lobe was when DS was delivered.
Obviously went off to google etc.
Not sure how common it is. All I know is that it can cause post birth complications as I wrote about above.

I didn't realise about the possible twin aspect, that's made me want to find out more!

Sorry to hear about the MMC Sad

Just re-read and saw you had a retained placenta removed in theatre. At least it wasn't missed & then you later had an infection/ haemorrhage.

Yes it wasnt picked up on scans .. I had 4 scans aswell as initially the placenta was low lying.

It was retained after birth and i did hav lots of bleeding during the birth with they then realised was due to the placenta

My lobes were both if equal size and my sons cord was imbedded into the other lobe before going into his own which lead them to believe there was a vanishing twin.

Just so few ppl seem to know nethin about it, i even mentioned it at my subsequent dd's birth and they had never heard of it! But did advise i should have the injection to speed up placenta delivery rather than natural.
