Has anyone had a successful waterbirth when their previous baby was over 4.5kg? Hoping it's not impossible! TIA.

Interested to see replies - my #2 was 4.85kg (was not expecting that!) after 1hr50 and I didn't get a chance to get in the pool but if we have another I would like to try. Was a rapid labour.

Are big babies contra indicated for pool birth?

Would have thought pool births are ideal for big babies, but am not a midwife. OP, why are you concerned? Would it not be easier to birth a big baby in a pool than on dry land?

All of the local midwife-led units' policies say they won't take women who've had previous babies over 4.5kg. None of the local hospital maternity wards have birthing pools. My GP thinks a waterbirth may still be possible as long as this baby doesn't measure big. Just wondering whether anyone has managed it! I very much want another waterbirth :).

Could you have a homebirth?

GreatGooglyMoogly · 27/01/2014 10:16

I'm not sure hazchem, as it obviously depends on whether a midwife would be willing to do it but I'll certainly look into it if the unit won't have me.

The other thing you can use if you can't have a water birth is a shower. Obviously it's not the same thing but the hot water from the shower has great pain relief properties and lots of delivery suites have en suit showers.

4.5kg is 9lb 14. Just has to look it up, as I have never heard of these policies. Are you in the UK OP? My son was 9lb 6, so just within the boundaries. All seems a bit bonkers - I still managed to push him out without any happy hormones, in a ridiculous position, wired to the max after three-day induction. Would be pretty miffed if someone presented me with all these policies. We are all made to make different sized babies, surely? He was meant to be a homebirth, and that is what I am planning for no.2 next month. Who will probably be bigger than 4.5kg.
