Music during labour

Did anyone listen to music during labour? Did it help you to relax at all?

If so, what did you choose?

Apparently I did - I've no recollection of it at all tbh. It is probably soothing for some but it didn't do anything for me.

I did, it helped me 'zone out'. Thankfully I had my iPod which had an eclectic mix of music on (both mine and DH's). I ended up listening to really random things as i got really annoyed by my usual favourites. I also had a hypnobirthing thing on there but the narrator's whining American accent irritated me. In summary, the songs and hypnobirthing tracks that I thought would be great didn't help but the random stuff which I had no intention of listening to were fabulous Grin

I had a playlist full of really up beat dance music, like what you would exercise to - I had kept visualising labour as a really big physical challenge like a triathalon. It was great in the beginning when the contractions were just starting (I was induced) as a distraction and a motivation but when they got to the really painful stage it just became annoying then I faded it out before the midwife just turned it off as she could see it wasn't doing anything for me. The last song to play was apparently Faithless 'Born Slippy' (but I suspect DP is using poetic license there!) :D

I packed it for dc1, but it never ventured out of my bag once. Wouldn't have been able to listen properly even if it had been on.

Yes absolutely, I couldn't have given birth without music.

I went for more calming and relaxing music that helped me go into my own bubble and made labour more enjoyable (can I say that?).

I listened to Ben Howard and Florence and the Machine mostly which was lovely.

The first time I gave birth a few years ago I spent months making a huge playlist for labour.

I set up a fast playlist of mostly Motown and rock, and a slow playlist of cheesy ballads and inspirational stuff. I ended up listening to a shuffle of the two of them. It really helped me zone out and focus on something other than the pain.

When I went into the room with the birthing pool they had on some relaxing whale song music. I asked them to change it over to the local radio station, which was much better!

I'm a music teacher but wanted absolute silence during labour even my DH and the midwives peed me off chatting during contractions

I'd prep some music and keep it in your hospital bag then it's there if you want it.
