uterus won't stretch beyond 37 weeks, due to 2 c-sections??

I wonder if anyone has ever heard of this.
I was told by a registrar, that due to two previous c-sections my uterus will not stretch beyone 37 weeks, and herefore I need to have the baby out by 38 weeks latest.
I did disagree with her, but I wondered what anyone with any info thought of this. I have done some internet searches and there is nothing about this.
Has anyone been told a similar thing?

Sounds v. odd - does she mean there's a risk of your scar tissue rupturing? Did you find Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in your web search - worth looking to see if any info.

That sounds extraordinary to me. I know of someone who had a spontaneous home birth after three sections, so she def got past 37 weeks. I am sure there are MN folk who have children after two c-sections who will be able to help you.

I wouldn't even vaguely trust a registrar on something this important. Have your section as late as you can, if the baby's coming out the sunroof, you don't mind it being big.

I was advised by registrar that by 38 weeks the baby is fully developed, it's just my body that is not ready to deliver. I actually found it quite distressing as have had two babies at 41+9 and 41+11 and want to have this (pg, 27 weeks) one as close to 'my natural due date' as possible.

I was subsequently told by two MW's that, in so many words, some registrars know bug*er all and I should wait until I see my consultant and have a sensible debate with him. Bit of a pain having to wait until 36 weeks to talk to someone who knows something about c/s, babies etc. But if MW's hadn't been so adamant that the registrar was talking rubbish, I'd have asked to see consultant earlier to put my mind at rest.

I should seek MW advice and if not satisfied, insist on referral to consultant - tell them it's making you worried/stressed...

What a load of complete and utter_bllcks. If that's the sort of knowledge need to be a registrar then I'm well qualified and should be given a job immediately.
My last three pregnancies went to 43 weeks and I was absolutely HUGE with each one.(natural births btw). My fIrst 2 pregs were sections and the gap between all my 5 children is 7 years. Take no notice, never heard such rubbish. The person should be sacked.

What a load of *, talk to Debbie or Gina on this website they will be able to answer your question and back it up with evidence if needed.

kdinas - i have had 3 sections, i have never had any problems! i think this sounds like a load of rubbish and this person has either no idea what she is talking about or she has not described things very clearly! i wouldnt worry at all, im sure everything will be absolutley fine!

I don't think these things can be predicted with that level of precision. Does she actually know how thick your uterus is? Did you have some sort of scan where she saw something that indicated you were at higher risk and therefore he/she would be better off if he/she exited at 38 weeks? Basically, I'd go back and ask why she thought this. ANd if she couldn't give concrete reasons specific to your medical history, I'd ask someone else for his/her opinion.

Uwila · 31/07/2006 11:19

Sorry, when I say "someone else" i mean a consultant. Not a registrar, and deffo not a midwife. When I ask questions about sections, I want to talk to someone who has performed them, not read about them or observed from a distance.

nutcracker · 31/07/2006 11:30

I have had 3 sections too. I actually had the last one at 37 weeks but for other reasons. The consultant would otherwise have been more than happy to wait until 39 weeks.
