Does anyone know about hysterectomy at the same time as a section? Risk of accretia....

..I'm 21 weeks pregnant, and have been told I have a 30% risk of the placenta (low lying and anterior) attaching to my old c-section scar, which would be a dodgy situation and mean a hysterectomy at the same time as a section.
Am a little shocked and freaked out, though this may not even happen - I will be re-scanned at 32 weeks to check. I'm not sure if its the risk of massive bleeding, the idea of being on the table for ages, or not having a uterus anymore (even though I won't be having more babies anyway) that is getting to me - but had an urge to post
Am telling myself not to be silly, it will move up, etc, but....am the sort of person who does best when forearmed with information. Anyone have any experience of this?

There are a lot of knowledgable experienced midwifes, mums etc who I am sure will have the information you need.

Thanks, Toady, I did wonder if I should try another forum but had no idea which!

they have to tell you there is a risk but it is a small one. I had a low placenta (and others i was in hosp with had too) and it was fine.

I have had this twice, both resulting in emergency csections under gs. But I didn't need a hysterectomy, don't worry.

Thanks Mabs - if you don't mind me asking, was the attachment diagnosed before your section both times? I'd love to avoid an emergency anything, and also a GA if possible....would have guessed that if they knew before hand it was going to be complicated, they could pre-empt and use a spinal block?

I know the likelihood is it will move up, but because its anterior and I have a 'rough' scar from a previously infected section wound, there is still a 30% chance of attachment. So am gathering info!

knew in both cases, my experience is clouded really by the fact that the placenta actually detached both times - one at 27 wk, one at 30 wks, hence the emergencies under ga. Had i made it to 37 wks then i wudn't have had the ga.

Yikes, that sounds rough...and makes sense of the emergency/ga. Sorry to hear you went through all that. Did the placenta detaching have anything to do with its adhesion to uterus/scar in the first place - or were they two separate issues?
Thanks for taking the time to answer, by the way - been feeling a bit alone with this as OB away for a month so no one to ask ??s of!
