Hello ladies

The consultant has said that his preference is for a cs under general due to back surgery i have had.

I had always assumed i would have a natural birth and was worried enough at the mention of a cs under local.

Has anyone else experienced being totally out and if so please could you tell me

  1. how long is it before you come round
  2. were you able to breastfeed
  3. did you consider expressing before you even went into hospital so babies first feed was breast milk?

This is my first child.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi hun, ive had both my babies by cs under a general and its fine, your awake within about half hour ish, yes you can breast feed straight away after. No i didnt consider expressing as they were both emergency even tho one was ment to be planned i went into early labour so all went out the window.

In my personal experience i was ment to have a local with my first and i felt them cut me so was put under by general, but was relieved to be honest as i was so scared. I know you miss the first magical moments but you can soon make up for them after.

Hope that helps x

I had my 2nd dc under ga. It was a planned section and the ga was planned also.

Not sure how quickly I came round tbh,but not too long. They keep you under long enough to put everything back and stitch up then it's a matter of how long it takes the ga to come out your system.

I breastfed with no problem. Dd was in scbu for 4 days and had her first feed at 2 days old and even with that, we were very lucky and both found it easy.

I found the cs a perfectly okay experience, a little nerve wracking of course, and you have to be able to trust the medical staff esp as your dp can't go to the theatre with you if it's a ga.

I found there were no problems bonding and I've never felt like I missed anything because of not seeing the first few minutes.

Good luck and hope all goes well for you.

Hi

My DS was born by EMCS, due to spinal not working correctly they decided to give me GA. I came round in recovery about 2 hours after he was born. The baby was with DP and MIL in that time. A morphine drip was in place when I woke up for me to press. I then had some toast and spent some time with baby who was sleeping. Once on ward tried to breastfeed but problems with attachment baby really wouldn't take even with midwives help. So we decided to give bottle. Not sure if that was anything to do with the CS.

I had a crash CS under general. was a bit woozy after but had specified bf and no formula in my birth plan and they tried to persuade me to give some but we didn't and went home breastfeeding. The hardest bit for us was DH not being allowed in because of the GA.

Thanks for your replies ladies I have had my 2yo newphew staying so not found time for mumsnet between walking the dogs, reading hundreds of books and baking!

Orla I didnt realise DH couldnt go in either Sad but it is reassuring to know that you come around so quickly. Poopoo i think you are right that makes it even harder.

As i had no idea that people even had babies under GA before the consultant told me i was going to have to You have all put my mind at rest a little so Thanks

I had a crash section under GA. I came round within an hour and also had a morphine drip. The (lovely) midwife already had DD latched on as I came round, which was lovely and helped with bonding - none of this was planned as it was all so rushed, but could be a good thing to request as yours is planned?

My milk took a bit longer to come in - maybe because I didn't go in to labour? But we got there in the end with breast feeding (and DD was a whopper 10lb+ hungry baby!)

amazonianwoman · 24/01/2014 09:09

Oh and yes poor DH had to wait on his own in the corridor Sad but they did bring DD out to him, so he got to bond and chat (think he was terrified!!)

I bf immediately after a cs too. I suggest you ensure someone is with you during the day time to help out and once you are off any of the drousy meds take the baby into the bed for night time feeds.
