More control on labour?

Hi

Is there anyway of having a conversation with the hospital/midwife about having more control on labour - I don't want a repeat of the last labour?

You'll need to focus on what it is you want and what you need to avoid.

If you're happy to post specifics, then there might be posters with relevant experience who can help with good lines to take

I'd probably talk about delivery options at next MW appointment, and move swiftly on to the specific issues. At least that way you will find out if anything you are asking for (or seeking to rule out) is problematic - and if it is, find out why. That will help you work out the line to take if you need to have this convo several times.

I don't want to scare 1st timers that's why i didn't put details (so look away now)..........

I was in labour for 4 days, got stuck at 2cm's I couldn't sleep, finally I was beside myself I was exhausted from lack of sleep and they found out I was badly dehydrated - finally admitted due to this was put on drips and given pethadine which I hallucinated with.

To cut a very long story short it was discovered during this baby back to back, and then I was attached to the machine that monitor contractions and baby and baby was in distress - I was now bleeding. I was still only at 4cm's went for ECS, however by time got all gowned up and sign forms I was at 10cm's and had a forceps delivery.

Baby was taken in to intensive care immediately lack of oxygen in labour, where he was for 6 days we've just got the sign off that he is fine - but what if I wasn't in hospital if I wasn't a stroppy pregnant mare at the end of her tether and cried on maternity ward when they said still at 2cm's - would I have a disabled little boy now??

What reassurances/guarantees can I have that I'm not going to be left like this again - they say "oh DS has now stretched everything it'll be quicker next time" - yep well sorry you kept saying everything would be OK last time!!!!

OH mentioned about trying again - gulp!!

4 days!!!! That borders on negligence any you're right...well done for being a 'stroppy mare' - you probably would have had a disabled boy if you had not put your foot down.

Do the same again, Piercy only this time do it antenatally. They seem to be fobbing you off. Don't let them.

Good luck

Sorry you went through that :( but well done for putting your for down, it's very difficult to do when we are at our most vulnerable so really, well done.

Hire a doula for the birth. You can discuss absolutely everything with her during pregnancy and she will be your advocate during your labour. If she's not needed she will just sit quietly but if you feel things are happening to you that you're not happy about, her job is to protect you and your experience. They are highly trained and experienced in all types of births. I wish I had one at my last birth but will at my next http://doula.org.uk
