Lochia - vaginal vs cesearean

Is it less after an ELCS? Do they "clear you out" so to speak? My lochia after my vb was three weeks of car crash bleeding so hoping it'll be less after a section!

I bled for five weeks after my CS so it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I don't have anything to compare it to, though.

Mine was several weeks after c sections too. Lots of clots to add, nice.....

starfishmummy · 10/01/2014 18:06

I have only had a c section. Was still bleeding for several weeks

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 10/01/2014 18:37

It was the same for me when I had a vaginal birth and the second time a c section Hmm

PestoStormissimos · 10/01/2014 18:39

I had 2 C-sections and bled for a good 6 weeks after each one.

Bleeding isn't dependent on method of delivery. There isn't a finite amount in there and they can clear it out during a cs but it leaks gradually after a vb. You are bleeding fresh blood from a wound the size of a dinner plate where your placenta has come away. How quickly you stop bleeding is to do with a lot of factors, age, health, propensity to heal, activity levels etc. 6 weeks is average regardless of method of delivery. I had two CS and bled for 6-7 weeks with one and 1-2 weeks with the other.

Meglet · 10/01/2014 18:49

I bled for almost 6 weeks after my EMCS and ELCS. It tailed off after a couple of weeks, but returned with a vengence when I over did it.

emsyj · 10/01/2014 19:07

I bled for 6 weeks after emcs and same after VBAC - I didn't notice any real difference, although I vaguely remember reading something on here saying that they suction the blood out when you have a section Confused - I was really surprised to read that! It didn't seem to make any difference to my PP bleeding.

blackteaplease · 10/01/2014 19:11

I have had 2 sections, bled heavily for about 6 weeks with the first and only had light bleeding for a couple of weeks with the second. My second was planned so not sure if that makes any difference

I have had both types of north and it wasn't really any different. Lasted about 2-3 weeks both times.

louloutheshamed · 10/01/2014 19:14

Birth not north!!

have had 2 c-sections. One of them I bled really heavily (as in, a trail of blood across the floor as I walked, because pads couldn't contain it ) the other, barely a drop of blood.

So in answer to the original question, you might still bleed heavily. Or you might not. That was helpful, wasn't it? Grin

I only bled for about 2 weeks after my cs and it wasn't as heavy however after vb I thought I was bleeding to death and 4 weeks pp I'm still bleeding

Athrawes · 11/01/2014 07:17

I am educated! I had no idea (fool?) that women bled after CS. Bet I am not the only one.

WeeTeaJenny · 11/01/2014 11:20

Slightly less with CS than VB
Four weeks in always ultra with VB, like normal period type
Was able to use panty liners in last few weeks after CS as went down to very light bleeding

Kelly1814 · 11/01/2014 21:04

I have only had cs so cannot compare....my consultant said they had hoovered me out (!) and I only bled for 3 weeks. The last week was very light.

FantasticMax · 11/01/2014 22:26

V birth here but bled for 6 weeks afterwards. The first few days were particularly awful ... I was literally gushing blood at times and it was so distressing that it made me cry. I had no idea that lochia would be like that, have always wondered if a section would be different.

satintaupe · 11/01/2014 22:35

I had hardly any after my ELCS; it was really light and only lasted a few days.

pumpkinsweetie · 12/01/2014 15:04

I had my baby just 5 days ago vaginally and mine is scant and has been for 2 days. The lochia was only heavy for 1-2 days, now at day 5 it is just a tiny bit of red but turning yellow.

CrispyFB · 12/01/2014 21:57

I bled the same for my vaginal birth, EMCS and ELCS. Far too long! Heavy bleeding for 3 weeks, then on/off (still needing a pad) until six weeks. Still had the odd bit of breakthrough spotting right up to 3 months. Punishment for missing nine periods, that's what it is.
