In early labour and would appreciate some advice

I woke up yesterday morning with bad cramping which continued all day. I saw the midwife late afternoon who did a sweep (I had one last week but my cervix was closed). She said I was 2cm dilated, 60% effaced and my waters were apparently 'bulging'. I was having irregular contractions which felt just like the Braxton Hicks I have had plus almost constant cramping. I had a bloody show immediately after the sweep and was told to go home and rest, I was in early labour and they expected things to progress quickly.

I managed to sleep last night although the cramps continued and I have alternated between dozing and bouncing on my ball today. My contractions are still really irregular, although I'm not sure exactly what counts as a contraction. Essentially I have constant period type pains, occasional tightening sensations like Braxton Hicks (which I assume are the contractions) and then a third type of pain which is like a very severe period pain. I can talk through it but it is really strong and comes on in a wave. Is this a type of contraction too or is it only a contraction when the muscles tighten and my bump goes hard?

Sorry if it's a silly question but I'm trying to time my contractions and get an idea whether my labour is progressing or not. To be honest I am fed up and bored!

I would say the third sensation like really severe period pain is the actual contraction. I don't remember any particular tightening sensations. What it really felt like was someone grabbing and squeezing me from the inside. I have no idea if this is helpful or not but good luck! It sounds like you are well on your way. And try to rest as much as you can.

Third pain definitely sounds like contractions - soon it will probably feel like it does when you've got a bad stomach upset - a kind of 'ache' in your bottom like you need to poo but it's just not happening. How exciting - enjoy meeting your lovely baby.

Thanks both of you, that's really helpful. I will start timing these pains as contractions, I think they are coming every 8-10 mins and lasting 30-45 seconds so that is progress. I can't believe how ok I feel, I think I've watched too many dramatic births on TV and my expectations are way out of line!

Yep the third one is the one to watch. How exciting. Good luck!

Hope things have progressed well.
I had what i assumed were braxton hicks for a few days. They got very painful starting in my bum and working their way forwards and my bump went hard. I felt them as waves of pain.
It got to the point where i was panting and breathing through the pain but as they were still very irregular I didn't think anything of it.
Anyway my waters eventually went and within 1hr i was 6cm and 40mins after that I was a mum!

You really wont know how far you are progressing until you are checked (i was shocked that I was 6cm when i arrived at the birth centre) Just keep going until the pain is unbearable and contractions are no more than every 3-4mins (that should give you time to get in)
When you speak to the mws they'll know if you are going well as they are very good at determining what point you are at from your voice and the breaks you are taking for the contractions.

Thanks for the good wishes, unfortunately nothing much has happened. The contractions are regular, frequent and long lasting but they aren't that painful and I can tell they aren't doing anything. My doula came out last night as things seemed to be getting somewhere but then it stalled again so I managed an ok nights sleep.

Off for a check now to see if I'm any further dilated and to decide what to do next. I want to stay at home as long as possible but I have to confess to getting bored and fed up now.

Poor you, that sounds really frustrating. I hope you manage to get some rest tonight and it all kicks off properly soon.

missmargot · 08/01/2014 20:35

Well, I'm still at home and no further dilated however my waters have broken and the contractions are properly painful now. I am using the TENS machine and monitoring my contractions but think I will be going into hospital soon. Fingers crossed things carry on quickly from here.

Good luck! If your waters have broken, it won't be too long now. I hope things are easy for you.

Thats a good start missmargot
Hope everything goes really well for you.
