Just wondering how much weight you lost following the birth of your baby?

I have put on approx 20lbs and I'm trying to figure out how much of that is chocolate related!!!!

Likely to be permanent- there's a strong family history. Thyroid's been dodgy now for many years but only treated for the last 5 (thanks to my wonderful obstetrician during last pregnancy).

meringuesnowflakes33 · 05/01/2014 11:20

None at all. When LO was 3 mo I was still at preg weight Shock

ElleCloughie · 05/01/2014 13:33

I weighed myself when I started maternity leave at 36 weeks, and had put on 20lbs. I next weighed myself two days after having DD - and I was that exact same weight. Three months on - still the same! I wish I could say my scales have broken, but I don't think so. Breastfeeding definitely helped my uterus contract and pull my tummy in very quickly, but is doing nothing for the cake weight that appeared on my bum and thighs once I stopped working. Also, most of my pregnancy weight went on my boobs, which are enormous now. However, although my weight may not have gone down, I do eat loads more than I used to, and it hasn't gone up!

littlemrssleepy · 05/01/2014 17:06

Duchesse - thanks for the info. Like many, I felt tremendous guilt at stopping bf. Not that it makes any difference now, but the suggestion that it might have been something causing it, rather than me feeling I just wasn't trying hard enough, is a small comfort.

OhNoGeorge · 05/01/2014 20:32

I had the opposite problem to Duchesse et al, I'm normally v small and can eat pretty much what I like, however I seem to put on weight quickly during pregnancy (gained a stone in first trimester both times) and gained 2.5 stone overall, with huge babies and tons of water (no idea how it all fitted in there as I am tiny). I lost 1.5 stone at birth both times and a further half stone in the following week with night sweats (pleasant!). The last half stone came off within 6 months of ebf and both times I've also lost a further few pounds BFing.

2 weeks to the day after my DS was born I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight and in my skinny jeans. I exercise throughout pregnancy and was careful what I ate - but I had an 8lb healthy baby! I put on about 7.5kg in total but it all went - though wa a bit flabbier than I would have liked - thats the next project!!

CrispyFB · 07/01/2014 13:07

I gain just over 3 stone each time, starting from a healthy (25, or just under) BMI. The reason for this is that when not pregnant I am generally very active and walk 40-50 miles a week with the pushchair etc. At around 10 weeks I start feeling the effects of SPD and have to cut back and by 20 weeks I'm useless. Depressed at my mobility issues and unable to leave the house for distraction, I stuff my face full of carbs - even though I am fully aware it's a bad idea.

First pregnancy it was a crazy hot summer and I swelled up loads - I lost a stone immediately after birth and a further stone over the next two weeks. A series of unfortunate events a year later (including nil by mouth for several days following an infection after an ERPC) got me back to my pre-preg weight.

DC2 and DC3 I lost around half a stone right away and a further half a stone over the following two weeks. Then it all just stalled, leaving me 2-3 stone overweight. I had to make a concerted effort (DC2 - train for a marathon, DC3 - calorie counting and walking 50 miles a week) to get myself down to a healthy BMI again but I did it within a year of birth.

Not looking forward to the coming year on that front! I am 28 weeks and already two stone up Sad and keep dreaming about being able to run again!

CrispyFB · 07/01/2014 13:08

I should add I exclusively breastfed all my babies.. I just find it very tricky to lose weight, harder than most. I dread to think how slow my weight loss would be if I hadn't been breastfeeding.

cantthinkofagoodone · 07/01/2014 13:09

I was Mrs Water Retention. I put on 24lbs and lost 14lbs straight away. The other 10 were gone by 3 weeks pp.

My tummy however took about 8 months to look like it did beforehand (with a few faded stretch marks added!)

babsie007 · 07/01/2014 19:03

Crispyfb - I have been reading up quite a bit on the breast feeding and loosing weight and general consensus seems to be that it doesn't always make a difference to your weight loss! I am hoping to bf for the first few weeks but likely that she will be going onto formula after that.

Emmac and cantthinkofagoodone - I hope I will be as lucky as you both but I doubt it!! I know I need to be more active in general but I have found it even harder as my pregnancy progressed. Will have to really put some effort in once bubs arrives.

Labour oxytocin causes water retention so you can actually find yourself weighing more immediately after birth...! In the course of the first week you will pee and sweat it out.

babsie007 · 07/01/2014 20:25

See homehypno, this is the info that no one tells you!! I assumed that once bubs was out, that would be an instant win on the scales.

I put on about a stone when pregnant.
One week after dd was born I was 4lbs lighter than pre pregnancy!!

babsie007 · 07/01/2014 21:35

Envy lj8893 I am very jealous!!! One of the girls at work was in the same boat as you, she actually ended up lighter than she started. She said even though she was lighter though, her shape had changed and clothes didn't for the same way they did previously.

To be honest, I had such a traumatic labour and birth and dd was in special care for 3 nights that I just completely went off food for that time. I didn't get my appetite back for about 2 weeks. But I was very lucky to not put too much weight on during pregnancy, I fully expected to balloon!!

EugenesAxe · 07/01/2014 22:03

Giving birth made me drop 1 stone. I had lost another stone by about 1-2 weeks later . Unfortunately I had gained 3st and that last one has still not gone... also I have regained some of the second!

NeatFreak · 07/01/2014 22:09

Between my pre op appointment for elcs and six week.check I'd lost 35 lbs, 10 of which were dd3. I was back in pre pregnancy clothes within six weeks or so and 7 months on I'm slightly smaller than.pre.preg (but expect to re ain when.I stop bf)

PirateSchool · 07/01/2014 22:12

I lost it all immediately (48 hour labour, hospital food, constant breastfeeding with food just out of reach etc).

I then put a stone back on over the next few months (aforementioned breast feeding made me HUNGRY)

Percephone · 07/01/2014 22:49

Lost 18lbs (6lb baby) but I had a lot of swelling when pregnant.

Didn't lose an ounce with breastfeeding. My endocrinologist told me that your body becomes very efficient when feeding and hangs onto every calorie, making it difficult for some people to lose weight until they stop feeding.

PuddingAndHotMilk · 07/01/2014 22:54

I gained 20kg in pregnancy, lost 15 the weekend I gave birth and another 6 in the next fortnight. I've put 3kg back on as I'm eating like a pig while breastfeeding. Healthy snacks are my New Years resolution rather than using Bf'ing as an excuse to eat my body weight in cake and chocolate.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/01/2014 23:31

I actually weighed myself after my waters broke and then after labour. I think I lost about 2 stone during labour (DD was 9 15 and there was a loooot of water).

Don't be surprised if breastfeeding doesn't make the weight drop off! Often it sticks as you end up eating more.
