How quickly were you discharged after a c/s?

Just that really!

I hate hospitals & intend to discharge myself as soon as the baby has been discharged.

This is my 6th but never had a c/s. I need to get home ASAP due to other dc etc. Thanks.

12 hours after the first.

36 hours after the second.

You can be discharged on day 2, with day 1 being the day of the operation. So first time round, I had dd at 10pm and was discharged at 10am the following morning. Most places recommend two nights tbh.

Can I ask why you want to be home asap? Is it for practical or emotional reasons re the children?

Shellywelly1973 · 27/12/2013 19:38

Both. My oldest ds will be staying for few days but younger 2 have sns & oldest ds has never looked after them. I've never been away for a night.

2 nights would be way too much!

I'm still hoping baby will turn so I have hb...would be so much easier!

The next day so 24 hours if the paediatrician comes round first thing and the midwife has time to do your paperwork.

TheBookofRuth · 27/12/2013 19:42

I had DD by EMCS at ten past midnight on a Monday morning, spent Monday and a awful, distressing, sleepless Monday night in hospital and after spending all of Tuesday demanding to see the consultant, managed to get her to discharge me Tuesday tea time. I couldn't have spent another night in there.

PumpkinPie2013 · 27/12/2013 19:48

I had ds by EMCS on a wed and came home fri tea. They wanted me to stay another night but with little support from midwives and in pain from the op I insisted on going home so my dh could support me.

olivo · 27/12/2013 19:50

I was told minimum 3 days if baby and mother both fine, but I am not in UK. I had emcs with Dd1, was in for 8days due to her being in SCBU, got out as soon as I could, 3 days with Dd2.

kchapper5 · 27/12/2013 19:50

I had DD by EMCS 6.43am saturday morning and wasnt allowed home till the monday lunch. and even then that was with me pushing to go early

Shellywelly1973 · 27/12/2013 19:52

Once the baby is discharged if i can stand i will leave.

After d 3 i took my own cathader & cannula out. It was 10 hours after her birth & I'd been left all day!

Five days after traumatic emcs - within 20 hours with elective second time round.

MoreBoober · 28/12/2013 00:41

I had a EMCS after a 27 hour labour, DS was born at 8.07am on Christmas Eve and I was in MIL's eating Christmas lunch at midday on Christmas Day ! I had to show them I could walk and pee!! In hindsight I wasn't ready to get out and I'm due to have DD next week by planned section and will be planning to stay 2 nights.

TheABC · 28/12/2013 00:54

48 hours - I had to be able to walk and pass clear wee. Plus the baby checks - as it was my first, they wanted to be sure I could breastfeed happily before going home. As it is your sixth, I am sure you already have some knowledge about that! :-D

I did push to go home, though (they were expected me to stay for up to 5 days).

Shellywelly1973 · 28/12/2013 01:37

Thanks. I will probably just ff as I'm on my own & need to go back to work asap. I had kind of hoped to be out within 24 hours max but I suppose I will wait & see..

I still have hope she'll turn. It would make everything so much easier.

Two cs first ecs, second elective. First I was home after 5 days second after 6 following post op complications. Baby stayed with me both times. Had to beg to be discharged! I've never heard of such early discharges! Had to wait for the big post cs poop! That took a crazy amount of time. Second time I had to heal my bladder which took about a week. (It got shredded during cs) here's hoping you avoid a cs like the plague, my belly is a total disaster after two cs. bring on the tummy tuck

Lavenderhoney · 28/12/2013 02:13

I couldn't wait to get out either, mainly because they fucked up so much at everything I was convinced they wanted to kill me and might just do it.

3 days with my first cs but I lost 2,5 litres blood. Big row as Mw said I couldn't go home as ds wasn't gaining enough weight, despite him being 4.75 kg when born, my milk slow to come. And often babies lose a bit at birth.

I asked to see her workings and it turned out the silly woman couldn't do % and had worked it out wrongly. I was gone in less than an hour:)

2nd cs- 3 days, but ready to leave after 2, different hospital and care.

nooka · 28/12/2013 02:21

3 days for ds, two for dd. Both times earlier than if we'd not pushed, and both times the delay was in getting the pead to see the baby and the meds to be prescribed for me - second time dh came back for the meds.

I hated being in hospital as I couldn't sleep at all - too light and too noisy for me.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 28/12/2013 05:27

I had DD at 4.46am on Friday and discharged against advice (due to concerns re: breastfeeding) on Sunday evening.

I hated every minute. On Saturday I decided to discharge myself (I was pain free and walking around since 4 hrs post op) but hospital convinced me to stay as DD had not had all her checks completed yet. If not for her I would have gone.

They promised I would be first in line to be discharged the following AM but I wasn't seen until late afternoon.

I got zero sleep while I was in hospital and was delusional by the time I got home. Bfing when perfectly fine the second I was removed from the meddling midwives and their conflicting advice.

kiwiscantfly · 28/12/2013 05:50

ELCS, breech baby and 1st. I stayed 48 hours and was almost turfed out, but since I couldn't sleep with all the noise (and couldn't afford the £170 per night for a private room) I was almost pleased. Thought I had bf sorted but only sort of did, very hazy in my mind now!

This time I'm in NZ and will stay as long as I can, inlaws with DD and since single rooms are standard with DPs being allowed to stay overnight, I'll be staying put!

However, if I was in your situation and everything is standard I'd push for a discharge as soon as possible.

NorthEasterlyGale · 28/12/2013 10:56

DS1 - ELCS due to breech. CS on Friday morning, out on Monday. I think. Worst few days of my life so is all a bit hazy.

DS2 - ELCS due in February. Have informed them that barring justifiable medical need to stay longer, I WILL be leaving after 24 hours and if they want me to stay longer they will need to catch me Grin. I'm arming myself with a copy of the NICE guidelines, a firm tone of voice and a steely gaze.

duchesse · 28/12/2013 11:08

I would have been ready to be shoved out the door after 3 days but because DD3 was in nicu and I was trying to establish breastfeeding with her, they kept me in as well for the 6 days she was in. We were discharged 7 days after her birth. It was fine actually, mainly because I was in a special ward for people without their babies for one reason and another (mostly all in nicu/scbu). It was quiet, I was on hand for feeding and all meals were provided. Plus the midwives took DD3 on the first night when she was handed back to me and she couldn't sleep even after I'd walked her up and down for hours. Under the glare of the lights in the midwives' office, she slept fine. Grin

Flickstar · 28/12/2013 22:00

DS was born on Friday at 10.31pm by EMCS and
I was home on Saturday by 4.30pm. So 17 hours- all baby checks etc and breastfeeding established

Shellywelly1973 · 28/12/2013 22:57

Isn't the variations of time spent in hospital interesting?

A friend was saying after her last c/s she was out in 24 hours. With her 1st it was 4 days. The same hospital.

I'm still scrubbing floors to get this baby to turn...I need some knee pads!!

I begged to go home sooner with DC2 and DC3, but they were three nights and two nights respectively. DC2 because she was 35+5 and had borderline jaundice/blood sugar issues so probably not that unreasonable. DC3, ELCS - no reason other than hospital policy Sad I would have been ready the following evening for sure.

Mrswellyboot · 29/12/2013 00:37

Five days. I live Ireland, that's the norm here. I felt I needed it.

Shellywelly1973 · 29/12/2013 00:47

Mrswellyboot Ive lots of relatives in Ireland & my cousins a nurse.

She was shocked that I want to leave hospital asap. I suppose IfI had a private room and Someone to look after the other dc for 5 days I wouldn't be so keen to leave.

I'm also surprised by the variations in people's stays! I had EMCS 5am Tue morning, discharged 8pm Friday. I suspect I may have been able to go a bit earlier if DD hadn't had such trouble feeding. As it was, we left with formula, syringes and a baby cup because she couldn't latch - but that's another story! I was up and about a lot the day before.
