Tea & toast

Rhianna1980 · 19/12/2013 20:28

It's a very stupid question but I have heard this being mentioned over end over again. "You will get tea n toast once you are done" and I have seen few women in my antenatal class being excited about it . So can someone explain to me : What's the infatuation with having tea and toast post delivery ?
Also , am I the only one who finds eating bread on its own bizarre?

I'm really not a massive fan of tea or toast. The tea and toast I had after my 2 births are two of the best meals I've ever eaten! Grin

I'm sure it's not mandatory though - don't have it if you don't want it.

callamia · 19/12/2013 20:30

I got hot chocolate!

And it was so so welcome.

PastaForRudolph · 19/12/2013 20:31

Not sure it is something to get excited about but you'll be very hungry after giving birth and obviously it won't necessary be a mealtime in the hospital so they will make you some tea and toast.

Very kind and considerate in these days of cuts if you ask me.

BunnyLebowski · 19/12/2013 20:34

I could have had anything I wanted post birth (home birth) but I still chose tea and toastGrin .

It is the food of the gods. Proper tea, proper bread, proper butter. And I dip my toast in my tea before eating.

I'm Irish so it's mandatory to love tea and toast. And ham sammiches.

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 19/12/2013 20:37

It is wonderful. I was induced so not allowed to eat for over 12 hours whilst going through the exertion of giving birth. Buttered toast and a cuppa was heaven - plain and simple. I hadn't realised how famished I was until they brought it to me.

LittleBearPad · 19/12/2013 20:40

It was fab. I didn't realise I was so hungry. Also induced and hadn't eaten for about 18 hours.

SingSongMummy · 19/12/2013 20:41

Ha! I got nothing offered to me first time around - and that was after a 69 hour labour. 12 hours after the birth I went in search of a cup of water...!

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 19/12/2013 20:42

On a related note, when I finally went for the wondetful shower a few hours after DD was born, they came round with menu choices for the evening meal. DH picked curry for me. Now being very overdue I'd eaten rather a lot of curry in the lead up to DD's birth, but also hospital curry! After having a baby!!?

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 19/12/2013 20:55

For some reason, it is the best food you will ever taste!

I think its the sugar (much needed after labour) mixed with the adrenaline and hormones of just having had a baby - I had a homebirth with DS2 and then had to go in to hospital to see if I needed stitches (needed better light and a better angle than the midwife could get at home) turns out I didnt but they still brought me some tea and toast and I held my baby, ate my toast and drank my super sweet, super strong tea before heading home to the chaos of a toddler and newborn - that hour or so was magical!

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 19/12/2013 20:57

I got nothing offered to me first time (hospital).

Second time there was a lot of faffing with placenta and stitches (home birth) and I ate ceteal bars until finally getting my toast about 2 hours later. It was nice, but then I'm a fan of hot buttered toast anyway Smile

catkind · 19/12/2013 21:25

I did get jam on my toast!

But then I forgot to eat it because I was too busy ogling DS.

I think it's slightly an aren't-we-british joke, but also a quick, warm, practical thing to feed you. Any food and hot drink would have been equally welcome.

lilyaldrin · 19/12/2013 21:28

I'd had a spinal block and forceps delivery in theatre, so was in the recovery room paralysed and alone as DP was elsewhere with the baby - a man brought my tea and toast in but then left it out of reach Shock so I had to lie there watching it get cold until someone came back in! After a bloody 30 hour labour too Angry

goodbyeyellowbrickroad · 19/12/2013 21:30

I would have loved tea and toast but instead got nothing. Had to wait for DH to come back a few hours after I'd given birth with supplies. The fresh bread, pâté and Brie he bought in were the most delicious things I've ever eaten

bump6 · 19/12/2013 21:34

Tea and toast after a 15 hour labour followed by emcs, nothing to eat all day as couldn't face it... It was simply the most divine thing ever at that point:-)

muddylettuce · 19/12/2013 21:52

I bloody wish I could have had tea and toast after the birth! I had an emergency c-section which caused some infection and damage so I was nil by mouth for 48 hours afterwards. I was given it after that though, I don't even like toast (unless smothered in marmite) but oh my god it was delicious...and the tea...Heavenly.

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 20/12/2013 09:44

With the second I had a section so didn't get anything but with the first I got tea and toast.
Other half ate it Shock, I was busy cooing over our new baby girl and in his words it was a shame to let it go cold and waste itShock.
18 years later he's had to make me breakfast in bed every Sunday morning to make up for it Grin

mamachelle · 20/12/2013 09:45

Im not usually a huge fan of toast but after delivery it is the best thing you will ever taste!

After i had dd4 i was starving! (Seriously, i havent been that hungry in all my life) one midwife finished cleaning up, one checked the baby over and another made tea and toast while i showered (while dh was getting me mcdonalds).

i cant wait for tea and toast next time :)

Rhianna1980 · 20/12/2013 12:11

I can totally see why now ! Lovely stories ladies x Thanks

Don't think I was offered tea, if I was I declined it. I did have toast and jam though, as did DH. It wasn't that nice, I was so disappointed!

Trooperslane · 20/12/2013 12:22

They've stopped doing it at the hospital I gave birth in.

I got a dry roll Confused.

magicballs · 20/12/2013 12:27

I received the offer of tea and toast too, as it was 3am and the hospital want you to eat something to give you some energy, and tea and toast are easy options when kitchens aren't open. I asked for and received hot chocolate, which although I drank it freezing cold as was breastfeeding, it was wonderful nonetheless, and my DH ate the toast as I couldn't bear the thought of eating after the birth - I felt like vomiting as had gone pain medication free. But I think its a wonderful thing for hospitals to offer, long may it continue!

NickyNackyNooNoo · 20/12/2013 12:36

I had tea and toast when I had my eldest it was like food from the heavens after giving birth. In fact I cried as I was overwhelmed by the whole thing may have been hormones

This was the only downside when I had DS2 as home...we got takeaway pizza instead Grin

littleducks · 20/12/2013 12:43

Toast is banned at my local hospital, it is so miserable being faced with cold sliced bread for breakfast.

DH went out to mcdonalds at 6am (only place open and i was sitting there from 5am waiting for it to!) to get me food as I was starving and wanted cooked food and a hot drink.

AndWhat · 20/12/2013 13:44

no tea and toast offered to me :( in fact I didn't eat anything till 24 hrs later I felt so sick!

AugustRose · 20/12/2013 13:59

I feel so bad for those of you who haven't been offered tea and toast, it's a British tradition as far as I am concerned.

I have been lucky after all of my children being born but the best tea and toast was after I had a homebirth with my third baby, sat in my own bed :)
