Hi
Can someone tell me what its like having the babys heartbeat monitored by scalp electrode during labour?
do you need to be so much dilated? Is it sore for baby, or mother? Are you attached and cant move around?

Im actually hurt from the straps and sonic circles things they use for the inductions and daily monitoring as im stuck in hospital with pre eclampsia my tummy has bruises from being on the monitor twice today and once yesterday (3+hrs each freaking time and not allowed to move position)
Im so dreading labour and more bloomin monitoring

The scalp electrode is directly attached to the baby's scalp by something that looks like a metal staple. There is no evidence that the baby finds this painful but also none, so far as i am aware, that they do not. Babies i have cared for after using this do not seem any more unsettled, on average, than the rest.

From the mother's point of view it it usually more comfortable and is not affected by her moving around. The mum still needs an abdominal monitor to pick up contractions but that is less tempermental than the heartbeat one.

Thanks mayhew
I could cope with the contraction monitor, the heartbeat one is strapped on so tightly i can never breathe
