Placenta encapsulation

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of having their placenta encapsulated post birth? I'm thinking of giving it a try as it's supposed to help balance hormones etc. I know the thought makes a lot of people a bit queasy but it doesn't bother me so I figure why not give it a go. Just wondering if anyone had tried it? Also if so would you recommend the raw method of the TCM method?

I personally wouldn't do it myself. The process really reeks.

There are people who do it for you for a fee though. Then there's the hospital policy on medical waste.. unless you're having a home birth.

I would have liked to have done it but was done having babies before I heard if it.

Thanks Gamer - I have found some people who can do it for us as even tho it doesn't gross me out I think doing it myself might be a bit much Smile I hadn't thought about the smell but god yeah I don't want the house stinking of placenta!

Hoping for a home birth so will make sure to have a sterile tub for it and include it in our birth plan incase we do end up in hospital.

I really want to do this next time, but don't think I could do it myself!
Lots of info here.

I think it's an awesome idea. Don't forget your placenta smoothie as soon as you can after the birth for a pick me up.

Lol - yep DH has been tasked with knocking that up for me Grin.

It's crazy the amount of stuff they can make out of it - the lady I've found even does placenta chocolates! I don't know what they entail but will probably stick to the capsules and smoothie for this birth Smile

I have a friend who does encapsulation, if you have a hospital birth you just take a container to the hospital and ask them to put the placenta in the container, it is part of you...it is not the hospitals property.

It is meant to really help with avoiding PND so if you have had that before I guess you'd try anything to avoid getting it again...I know women who have had it for 2nd and/or 3rd births and noticed a difference in energy levels and post birth recovery...you don't hear about it until you get to know people and get talking to them as its not something you would advertise having done particularly.

I very much doubt the DH will make up a smoothie for me so I guess I'll be employing the services of my friend (or getting the magimix out myself...), apparently you don't need much in the smoothie to get the benefits.

I am torn! There is a lady near us who does it and says she covers our local hospital (I have to have an ELCS) so the opportunity is there.

I like things to have decent scientific research behind them though, and although anecdotally it sounds great, I feel like I need more convincing. I want to be convinced, y'know?

Also, TCM or raw? Argh, I have no idea.

I will pass on the smoothie. I don't think I could handle that.

I think I would probably stick to the capsules as well Grin come back when you've had a good shot of them OP. I really wish I could have tried it.

I had my placenta encapsulated - a friend offered to do it for me. I think they definitely did make a difference - had loads of energy, and my lochia was very light but I developed a really bad headache after a few days. I'd heard that headaches could be a side effect of taking the capsules so I stopped taking them - headache went, so I didn't start again. (Lochia got a lot heavier though.) So from personal experience they are definitely effective - only not in a totally positive way in my case!

Where I live they have a whole new trick going- homeopathic encapsulated placenta. Presumably they just chuck the placenta in the bin and give you some sugar capsules. Not sure whether to be disgusted that these scams are legal or a bit gutted that I didn't think of it.
