Needing to push before fully dilated

Has this happened to anyone?

I had huge urge to push at about 5/6cm literally couldn't stop it. MW was insistent that I mustn't push and so suggested an epi. This was wonderful relief but contractions stopped and I ended up with ventouse delivery.

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience of this or why it happens? I've always wondered if my body knew best and if left to push I would have just dilated very quickly.

Sorry for replying to a really old thread!
My experience is very similar to yours! I also pushed early from 5cm but found them to be amazing pain relief, so along with gas and air, the last 3 hours were bareable.
I could tell the midwife was concerned about the urge to push but she was seeing how it went and didnt try to stop me.
They were really surprised when I told them his head was there so I believe it was right to listen to my body and gently go with the contractions...however I did have 2nd degree tear...
