Gestational Diabetes - what happens after the birth?

Hello ladies, not sure if I am in the right place for this post but dont know where else to try sorry.

I have gestational diabetes, I have been started on a small amount of insuline today but told that I am likely to need more as the weeks go on.
I am doing as I am told with this as I want the best for my baby, I am worried though as they said today it is highly likely that baby will need to go to the special care unit after he is born. They will probably need to monitor his blood sugar and maybe give him a drip to make sure his levels stabilise. I can't help but panic about what will happen if they don't :-(

I am hopefully seeing the consultant next week and will ask loads of question, I'm just wondered if anyone has any experiance of what happens to baby after birth please?

Thank you

My gd was diet controlled, after birth I had to stay over night and babies blood blood sugars were checked after first feed (heel prick). If they were ok then that would have been it. My babies were a tiny bit low (by 0.3) so he had to have a bit of formula to bring them up and that worked straight away. I was never told he would probably need to go to special care. It may be different as you need insulin but I can't see why providing your blood sugars are always in the normal range but I am no expert. I hth and that you get all the answers you need from your consultant. Xx

They told me that the danger is that the baby is constantly exposed to a lot of sugar. And so it produces a lot of insulin to deal with that sugar. When tehy are born the sugar supply is abruptly cut off and some babies end up going hypoglycaemic and needing special care. I was told to ensure my baby fed well straight away. In the event she latched on for over an hour and was absolutely fine.

Hi ladies
Just a little update from me incase anyone else is asking the same questions. So I saw my consultant today and she has agreed to give me a section at 38 weeks wich means New Year's Eve! I will have to go in to hosp two days before for steroids and glucose monitoring but apart from that if all goes to plan then things should hopefully go smoothly. She did say that I can still formula feed as it means they see exactly what is going in to baby. They will test babies blood two hours after birth to check glucose levels and continue to do so for a couple of Days, if baby is ok then we will go home if not then he might need to go to special care for a day or so but they said it is most likely baby will be fine.
Fingers crossed things run smoothly. Thank you for all your replies and advice xxxx
