Gestational diabetes and being induced or given c section?

Hello ladies, I am 30 weeks pregnant with my second child, my experiance of birth from my first was horrible and has left me undecided as to if I should have a c section this time or not. I have chatted it through with the consultant and we decided to see how things progressed, if baby is very big again then I would have a section at 39 weeks unless I feel happy to continue and see how I go, then maybe have a natural labour but with the option to request a section at anytime. The consultant said she didn't want to induce me so would be natural when it happens or section.
However I have now been told that I have gestational diabetes which I believe changes things. My understanding is that with GB they normally induce at 38 weeks, I saw a doctor yesterday who to be honest wasn't a great help but he seemed to think they would induce at 38 or let me go full term depending on how pregnancy is progressing, he seemed to think they wouldn't give a section at 38 weeks.
I will hopefully see the consultant at 36 weeks after my next scan but I am left wondering if anyone else has any experiance of this that they could share with me please? I felt in control and like I new what was happening but now it seems up in the air again! :-(

I hope someone can give u advice soon.

Im in a very similar position, growth scan at 29w and baby is very big, gtt positive and just been to see the GD clinic to start testing bloods (30w now)

I was told that with GD they dont let you go over your dates. I asked what 'dates' and was told 39w.

i have so many questions and no one to ask!

Absolutely petrified about all and i too feel like i have lost all control (not that i had much control before - or choice in where i give birth)

Less than 10 weeks to go tho summersun :)

Hi Summer,

I had GT and was induced at 39+6. I had a 41 hour labour which ended in a ventouse delivery in theatre, the doctor was expecting me to end up needing a C-section & i was only minutes away from having one but luckily ventouse worked.
The research I did on inductions told me that only about a 3rd end up with a totally natural birth and most end up requiring some form of assistance. So if you're 50/50 anyway you might prefer to have an elective C-section rather than an emergency one after x hours of exhausting labour. by the time it was time for me to start pushing (i think at the 36 hour mark) I barely had the energy to do it, so I can see why many inductions end with some form of intervention.
Hope everything goes well no matter what you opt to do.

I have been told by my consultant that even if I have gestational diabetes, they will not section me before 39 weeks. I had probable undiagnosed GD with my last baby, she weighed in at 10lb 9ozs at 38+2 (mw's were going on my dating scan 39+2, hospital were going on my lmp date 38+2 and were furious that they had sectioned me early even though they knew her size).

TarkaTheOtter · 07/11/2013 21:05

In my area if you need medication to control GD them you will be induced at 38weeks regardless of baby's predicted size. I wasn't even offered the option of a section but in both my pregnancies baby and I have measured to dates. In fact dd was born 7lbs at 38 weeks.
I gave birth without intervention despite induction by drip (and epidural) - only had an 8hr labour and dd never got distressed. So induction can be positive too.

When is your EDD summer?
Im 15.01.14 although im certain i am at least 5 days further on than they say
dating scan disregarded measurements and EVERY scan since ive had 5 extra due to problems baby has measured 7+days ahead. But they will now use the 'gestational diabetes' card to explain the size discrepancy
-_-

Are you testing your bloods now?

Tarka its good to hear a positive story about induction

Summersun1983 · 09/11/2013 08:32

Oh wow curly, very close :-) My due date is 13/01/14 but have a sectioned booked for 9/01/14 but that's only if I get that far and decided I don't want to wait for things to happen naturally, saying that I guess things could change now.

Yes I am testing blood, once a day before a meal then two hours after. I have done a few additional tests that I haven't recorded as not been asked to ( just tested extra as curious really ) a couple have been over 7.1 although only slightly, this has worried me though as I feel these would go unnoticed if I hadn't done extra. Hope that makes sense? I will have a chat with my diabetic team next week.
Xx

Another positive induction story here. I was diagnosed with GD at about 30 weeks. We managed to keep it under control with diet. In the last 3 or 4 weeks they started making noises about insulin but I thought this was ridiculous as nearly classed as full term by then, said so so they held off. Baby was expected to be big. Because blood sugars were ok they booked me for induction on my due date at 40 weeks. When I went in I was 3 cm dilated already and only needed a pessary and a good sweep later in the day. From there they broke my water towards teatime. Once they broke my waters the contractions got very intense and DD was born 3 hours and 45 minutes later with no further intervention.

She was indeed quite big, 9lb 8oz but was such a positive birth compared to my first which was quite a traumatic 24 hour, delayed second stage due to asynclitic presentation and vebtouse delivery.

curlywurlyllass · 09/11/2013 22:25

My bloods have been very up and down, morning n night around 7.4
Ive even had a 9.8 2hrs after dinner last night that panicked me. i was told if it goes above 10 to call triage and probably go in for checks :( checked at bedtime and back down to 7.4 phew!

wow u have a section booked already! No one has spoken about birth plans with me yet

Ive not seen dietitian consultant yet and should get diet advice on monday from him.

Im so petrified to eat!
and little fella goes crazy kicking n rolling when im hungry-for at least an hour at a time

TarkaTheOtter · 10/11/2013 03:54

Hi curly don't obsess over the highs - I had some very high readings before starting on insulin (11/12 etc) and no one suggested the baby was in immediate danger. Just that sustained highs could be a problem.

curlywurlyllass · 10/11/2013 09:27

Thanks tarka, my hcp's had scared me a little (probably due to anxiety over the hospital i will get sent to if i need meds is the one im petrified of)
