Induction due to SPD?

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this. I'm really scared of going up to my due date or, even worse, over it! I'm suffering from severe SPD which is made worse by my scoliosis and inflammation in my joints. I have only worked for 2 weeks of my pregnancy (26 weeks now) due to the pain and not being able to drive. I've seen a physiotherapist who can't do anything for me as it's mainly due to my existing back problems. The pain is getting worse each week and I'm pretty much house bound. I'm scared that if I go up to my due date or over, that I will be in unbearable pain!

I've spoken to a midwife who says I can request to be induced when I next see my consultant but all the things I've found online says it's unlikely they will do it. My question is has anyone got any experience of this? Have you been induced due to SPD or have you asked and been told no? And if you were induced, how many weeks were you?

Sorry for the essay but really hoping for some insight, not had much luck on another forum I tried. Thank you!!

First pregnancy - refused.

This pregnancy - agreed. Having my section two weeks early.

I was induced at 37 weeks because of SPD. I'd seen the womens health physio from 18 weeks and at 33 weeks we decided it was causing me more pain to get to her than any benefit I'd gain from any manipulation she did. She wrote a really good letter to the consultant and when I next saw him at 36 weeks they set the date for induction the next week.

I'm not sure how typical this is though.

littleoaktree · 24/10/2013 21:05

I asked with ds2 and they refused, luckily he came a week early anyway.

My spd wasn't as bad as yours sounds though so it's definitely worth a try

sweetkitty · 24/10/2013 21:08

Consultant offered me an induction at 39 weeks due to SPD with no 4. I refused and said 40 weeks as I wanted him at term but couldn't face going overdue. It's great once you have that date and can count down the days and cross each one off.

I also know someone who was induced at 38 weeks.

For me it was either cocodamol or a wheelchair (not an option with 3 other DCs).

5madthings · 24/10/2013 21:12

They tried to induce me at 38wks with my first as I had awful SPD, literally couldn't sleep be a use of the pain. Unfortunately for me it didn't work and I then had to wait til I was overdue to try again (but I was a very unusual case!)

So yes they can induce you early, you may have to be persistent and firm tho.

absentmindeddooooodles · 24/10/2013 21:38

I had hideous spd. Had existing hip and lower back problems. From 26 weeks I could barely move. I had crutches and physio neither of which helped. Everything was agony.

This is where my miswives were truly shite. They wouldnot induce me. I went 15 days over. I was the sizeof a house ( bump wise) and couldnt walk more than a couple of steps without collapsing and sobbing.

Im not a wuss. Im used to major hip pain so I know I wasnt over reacting too much. But they wouldnt help.

I begged, and they daid that they would never induce anyone just for spd.

I had ds.....back to back and couldnt move so made it that much worse.....

It was only after I jad him that the health visitor told me I should uave been induced early.

So dont take no for an answer. If its bad they can induce you. I was in tears 99% of my pregnancy bevause I just couldnt move sit stand or lie down without being in pain. Ask about it now and tell them how much you are suffering.

Also....pregnancy pillow, back and bump support, no tight trousers, and as much paracetamol as you are allowed.

Hope this gets better for you x

absentmindeddooooodles · 24/10/2013 21:40

Also they can prescribe you co-codamol. ( I had a random intollerance to this in pregnancy so was a no go. :/)

5madthings · 24/10/2013 22:21

Yes they can prescribe co codamol and other painkillers,'I was hospitalised a few times so i could have stronger painkillers so I could sleep and they could moniter baby to make sure he was OK.

sweetkitty · 24/10/2013 22:22

I used to wake 20 mins before I had to so I could take cocodamol and paracetamol, I would take half the dose of cocodamol and a regular paracetamol. Your always worried about taking it in pregnancy so I would take less than prescribed. I would take another dose at lunchtime to get me through to when DP came in. Then at 7.30 I would take 2 to knock myself out enough for half a night of decent sleep. I remember lying in bed thinking would it be bad to pee myself as getting up for the toilet was so painful. It's awful SPD the first time a MW told me "well some back pain is common in pregnancy" Hmm

5madthings · 24/10/2013 22:24

sweetkitty when I couldtn walk and was in agony unable to sleep a Dr told me 'it was normal to be uncomfortable in pregnancy'...

Luckily I never got it as badly in my next four pregnancies :) despite monster sized babies. Tho to still niggles and plays up now and my youmges this nearly three, eldest is 14.

Annonynon · 24/10/2013 22:28

I have been induced three times at 37 weeks due to severe spd, I could possibly have been induced a little earlier if I was desperate but I tried to hang on till 37 weeks

I was also prescribed stronger painkillers, co-codamol/tramadol and even oral morphine. There are lots of safe options available but sometimes you have to push for them, only a consultant was able to prescribe them for me though

OwlMother · 24/10/2013 22:28

I was induced due to spd in my 2nd pregnancy. Not early mind you- bang on 40 weeks and I'd been 5cm dilated for a week or so already. Induction was simply a matter of breaking waters. By the time I got to 40 weeks I was essentially housebound though. Couldn't walk, or drive. Good luck.

sweetkitty · 24/10/2013 22:28

Mine got progressively worse each pregnancy, in part my fault 4 babies in under 6 years but that's me done now and when you have that last baby and the SPD goes (although I still get twinges now and again) it's fantastic. The little blighters are worth it (but you don't say that at the time)

lola0106 · 24/10/2013 22:39

Thanks for the replies everyone! You've given me some hope! Already on a very high dose of codeine and paracetamol but unfortunately doesn't even take the edge off the pain and I'm not due to see my consultant again until 34 weeks but will beg when I see her!

Op

You sound exactly like i was. Dd is now 12 months old.

I got induced the day after my due date, they were too busy to do any sooner as they were doing alot of inductions afew weeks before.

They dont like to induce as you are at high risk of a EMCS.

Unfortunatly in my case, i was induced and had very strong contractions every 5 mins lasting 1 min each time. This went on for 22 hours!

When i was 10cm and started pushing, midwives realised that dd was back to back so i ended up with a c section.

The spd took 10 months to disappear after birth and i had it really bad from 8 weeks pregnant.

I know exactly how you feel and its awful.

Thesunrising · 24/10/2013 22:45

Have you tried treatment from an osteopath? This has helped me with my spd (and heartburn) more than physio (which had no impact whatsoever). Benefit was apparent from first session and has helped me with my sleep as well as physical discomfort in moving around.

IneedAsockamnesty · 26/10/2013 20:54

I've been induced twice at 35 weeks for SPD and HG and on Monday I'm going into hospital (36 weeks) for the same thing.

I have been told that there is very little that will prevent my admission and I can safely say its happening they are going to try to induce me for no more than a day and a half and if that does not work a cs will happen

BettyandDon · 26/10/2013 20:59

I had terrible SPD. Unable to walk and could not even lie down to sleep it was so bad. No-one even suggested induction. I just rested up as family stayed with me to take care of DC1.

I went 2 weeks overdue but the baby was born in less than 2 hours and literally fell out with no pain relief. I think it was because my muscles and joints were so lose, so the birth was actually brilliant.

VomitingVeronica · 29/10/2013 21:22

My consultant flat out refused to induce for my spd, ridiculous considering the state I was in. I requested and pushed and pushed and pushed some more for a csec and I'm so glad I did. My recovery from the csec was fine, dd came out at 39 weeks and I got to start the recovery period rather than continue to get worse. I was petrified of doing more damage in labour or ending up with an epidural and a midwife tugging my legs every which way. I started having trouble from 10 weeks (to go with the hg, it was fun!) and I can honestly say that that pregnancy was one of the worst times of my life but it does end. I second finding a good chiropractor.
