Pain Relief, what did you have?

jofeb04 · 28/06/2006 19:23

Im really interested in your views on the following:

What pain relief did you use during labour?

Did you have any complications?

The reason Im interested in this is because many people say that various pain relief can cause complications, but in my case, the complications caused the pain relief

TIA

BTW, the information will be printed off, but will be held in confidence.

Put down on my birth plan that I didn't want any but complications led to a 21hour difficult labour and ended up having pethadine, gas and air and an epidural that was topped up 4 times. I almost had to have an emergency cesaerean but didn't in the end. Without the pethadine that let me sleep I would have been too exhausted (had been in early stages of labour for three days previously with almost no sleep), and don't feel I could have done it.

I was like you - the complications caused the pain relief not the other way round.

Janbo25 · 28/06/2006 19:58

what complications was there?? I had gas and air and pethadine, no real complications as such my pain was just labour i think?

hana · 28/06/2006 20:03

1st - had an epidural that wore off close to pushing stage and then had gas and air. No complications other than needing oxytocin to regulate and speed up my contractions. didn't tear or need stitches

2nd - used gas and air, no complications
hth!

gas and air and pethadine with dd, no complications

gas and air with ds, again no complications. he was out with 3 pushes.

bubblez · 28/06/2006 20:04

Gas and air

juuule · 28/06/2006 20:14

First baby. Induced. Had horrendous pain from start to finish. Had pethidine which did nothing for the pain but made me feel out of control and detached. Everyone around me treated me as though I wasn't there and ignored me asking what was happening. Episiotomy and 3rd degree tear.

Second baby. gas and air. Episiotomy again.

Next 7 babies. Some with gas and air. Some of them with no pain relief at all. Tried to ensure that I stayed home until transition. Small graze with baby no.4. No problems with the others even baby no.9 who was induced.

none
no

nicnack2 · 28/06/2006 20:17

ds1 had to have epidural which resulted in burn to my bottom due to iodine and me not feeling it, and 2nd degree tear.

DS2 gas and air no complications.

dd was born in Faro, Portugal.Horrible. No pain relief. It was an induction, dd came out way too quick, and an episiotomy (they did give me local anaethetic for that but it didn't work properly.....)

mumfor1standfinaltime · 28/06/2006 20:23

Gas and air

Followed by am emergency c section with epidural

No complications

AllieBongo · 28/06/2006 20:24

gas and air and too much of it, i puked my guts up 2nd time.

Janbo25 · 28/06/2006 20:26

it's good to hear of all these good births with no complications

hester · 28/06/2006 20:27

TENS, followed by gas and air, followed by epidural when they wanted to augment labour. Which led to blood pressure crashing, fetal heartrate decelerating, contractions slowing, and then an emergency CS.

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 20:27

dd1 - epidural. complications caused the pain relief, methinks. she was face presentation w/her hand up next to her head. she failed to descend fully so i had forceps.

dd2 - FA. tried one puff of g&A and felt i was suffocating, so just got her out fast as i could.

Janbo25 · 28/06/2006 20:28

what does augment labour mean?

liath · 28/06/2006 20:29

TENS & a warm bath.

No complications. My gut feeling is that I didn't need pain relief because I had a relatively easy labour rather than it being easy because I didn't use pain relief but I'll never know. Stayed at home until I was ready to push, which I do think helped (though made for a thoroughly unpleasant car drive in...).

hester · 28/06/2006 20:35

Janbo, it means that they give you drugs to speed up and intensify the contractions (I was having a long hard back labour and getting nowhere fast).

MrsDoolittle · 28/06/2006 20:36

paracetamol

With DS1 I had an epidural that only worked on one leg (!), pethidine and gas and air. I was sick as a dog and out of it for the majority of the time. With DS2 I was determined not to repeat this and used a TENS machine with just a few puffs of gas and air and the birth was v easy. I recommend TENS machines to every pregnant mum to be that I meet....shame I'm not on commission!

no pain relief and no complications.
birth was at home and the pushing stage was relatively slow (2hrs approx) i was falling asleep between contractions(!), but i think being allowed to go at my body's own pace was good for me and DD. sure if i'd been in hospital they would have tried to speed it up.
