Requesting an induction

DH has just started a new job and been told that he is going abroad when I will potentially be 14 days overdue. I wanted to know whether you thought it would be possible to request an early induction on the nhs, say at 41 weeks? Will the powers that be agree for such a non medical reason? I had previously thought that I would try to avoid induction so haven't done much research. I am seeing the midwife next week so will obviously ask her too.

Thanks

hi okavango tbh i dont think they would do a induction with out good reason in my first pregnancy i had real bad spd & begged for a induction at 40 weeks they said no we cant do that but i did have a sweep from 39 weeks first one failed second one at 40+5 worked i think you could most likely reason with them about getting a sweep? id ask your midwife as each area varys good luck

my trust has been know to induce for partners who are in the forces and due to go over seas so you never know.

Thanks very much. I have spent the last three months doing my Hypnobirthing exercises like mad and cannot quite believe that I now want to induce. DH is in big trouble.

Been in touch with the midwife. She says no because if the baby is not ready it is much more likely to end up with a c section.

Also my induction took 5 days, so inducing 7 days before baby is due might not even get you home from hospital before he leaves.

Do you have a back-up birth partner/someone who can stay with you in the early days/Weeks?

We have a doula booked but will need to check that she is happy to be a birth partner (she mentioned in relation to another client that she charges more as it is a bigger commitment etc etc). We will have to get a post natal doula too as I don't want my mum to be under too much pressure. I have also told DH that we cannot induce so we will see if he has any ideas. I am 35+5 so if the baby is late I have a bit of planning time.

It is not really your midwife's decision, it would need to be a consultant decision so if this is what you really wanted then I would insist on talking with one.

also, nice guidelines for induction of pregnancy for postdates recommend between 41+0 to 42 weeks pregnant - so a request for induction is not unreasonable, given your circumstances, at this time. The rest is jsut hospital policy (and they are all different as to when they induce etc)

Thanks Bear I will look at the guidelines. DH negotiating for flexible flights too so we might manage it.
