Help! Been in first stage of labour for 24hr+

Need some advice, help, support.
This is second pregnancy and so far labour is very different to the first.
Have been having regular contractions every 5mins for the last 24hrs. Slept about 2.5hrs last night and went to hospital this morning for monitoring. They confirmed in labour but contractions not very strong so sent home.
No developments all day, have just phoned birth unit who said to have a bath and take some paracetamol, burst into tears as am so tired and just know I won't be able to sleep tonight.
How can I speed this first stage up. Was text book with DS, 12hrs labouring am feeling quite low and abdomen is very tender.
Please help.

oh wellsie i had a very long first stage too so i totally sympathise. I don;t have any tips to spead it up though i'm afraid. I am sure some wise words will be along soon. Do you have someone with you?

TheLadyVanishes · 24/06/2006 20:59

only want to say good luck and fingers crossed you may have had your baby by the end of this evening, mine was a long labour and i vaguely remember being like a cat on hot bricks and pacing the floor (absolutely knackered btw) eventually after the 5th visit to the maternity ward i begged for some drugs and slept for a couple of hours

DH is with me and Mum and Dad are staying as they need to look after DS when we do go in. Just anxious that this might go on for days and my Mum & Dad will need to return to work at some point.
Am 39wks & 6days so bang on time, I asked if they would do a sweep to speed it up but they said no not until your 40wks & 3days do they do sweeps - bloody protocol!

I was in labour for a long time with my 2nd, contractions were not painful and were all over the place. The first stage went on for what seemed for ever but as soon as i hit 2nd stage it was all over in a flash. Have you got a birthing ball? i found that helped with the pain in my abdomen, also lying in the bath.
Good luck, hope you don't have to wait too much longer.

me23 · 24/06/2006 21:06

oh you poor thing, hope things get going soon!
The only thing I can suggest is to keep moving even if you can't leave the house (because of ds) keep walking around!
good luck.

Thinking about going out in the car and finding loads of speed bumps.

I thihnk you did feel in labour longer with successive preganancies. I know I did (have had 4). The early stage can go on a long time and it is really wearing isn't it? I hope it all happens for you tonight. And I know how you feel about feeling too tired to go through with it, but I am sure you will find the strength when you need to. Good luck.

bramblina · 24/06/2006 21:17

My MIL swears that did it for her. She also talks about skipping but I don't think most pg women can do that at 40wks! Pineapple is said to be good. Also walk up and down as many stairs as you can. Good luck.

Still no developments. Slept really well last night and woke this morning with no pains so called Hospital who said this can happen and that I'm in for a long latent phase.
Then at 11.20 they started again and was getting them every 20mins only for it all to stop again at 4pm. Now they are all over the place. Still haven't had a show and fed up of being uncomfortable. Have sent parents home who were up for the weekend to look after DS.
My question tonight is this, do you think it would be ok for DH and I to try and do the thing that got us into this mess in the first place. Not sure I'll be able to but just wondering if there is any risk to baby if we did. Waters are still intact and like I said before I haven't had a show so the plug is still in.
Thanks in advance.

Can I get this right. You are saying "I've been in early labour for nigh on 2 days, is it OK for me to have sex?"

Respect

mrspink27 · 25/06/2006 20:10

Go for it!

wellsie · 25/06/2006 20:11

QueenPeaHead, I am getting desperate!! Figured if hospital won't do an internal than DH and I could DIY it

I started with regular contractions on the thursday which then stopped 12hrs later, then started for another 12 hours, then stopped, then started, then stopped. Basically but the sat night I was at the end of my tether so yes, I forced dh to finish what he started and by 6pm on the sunday I had my little boy If you are up for sex then def do it!

wellsie · 25/06/2006 20:12

So do you think it would be safe? Or is there any sort of risk.

Chloe55 · 25/06/2006 20:13

Providing your waters haven't broken then it should be fine - well I was anyway.

mrspink27 · 25/06/2006 20:14

Quite safe as long as you can manouevre yourself at 40 weeks! Or DIY alone if you cant face it!

DumbledoresGirl · 25/06/2006 20:15

Yes go on. It might be the last time in months that you want to!

me23 · 25/06/2006 20:15

wow chloe55 it def worked for you then, wellsie I would give it a go! good luck hope that does the trick for you.

wellsie · 25/06/2006 20:16

LOL Right, I'm off to bed. DH is up for it bet he's thinking it'll be the last chance for long time
Wish me luck girls!

You are lucky your dh wants to. I really did have to force dh with a lot of "Come on, have you nearly finished? Will you hurry up and get it over with!" coming from me and dh saying, "You're not helping honey, are you sure this will work - it had better be bloody worth it!" Apparantly it is the sperm that helps move things along more than the rumaging so go the whole hog if you can.

bettythebuilder · 25/06/2006 20:46

lol at 'rumaging' chloe55

bramblina · 25/06/2006 21:12

Wellsie when I posted lastnight I wrote "if you could face having sex then give it a go" then deleted it as thought it would seems a bit rude!
hope it was worth it!

Chloe55 · 25/06/2006 21:41

Well if you thought that comment was rude what must you think of me

bramblina · 25/06/2006 22:59

Hysterical! Not every day you get an insight in to other people's "relations"!

mears · 25/06/2006 23:07

Wellsie - a bit of nookie is exactly what you should be doing. Sperm has prostin in it which is waht is used as to start induction. Word of warning though - you might have to do it more than once . Good luck.
