Having steroids this morning - should I choose bum or thigh!?

Hi

Having steroids today (and tomorrow) before elcs for twins at 37+3 on Tuesday (it's my hospitals policy to give steroids for elcs pre 39 weeks).

This is all new to me as had DD naturally after being induced at 42 weeks!!!

For those who have had them, I gather they're v painful... Is bum or thigh better, given I have to carry on as normal with nearly 3 year old DD (already promised a trip to the park...) afterwards until I go in on Tues!

I had steroid injections the other week and had them in my upper bum. It was sore as the liquid was going in but once you give it a rub and walk it off it's fine. I didn't have a mark or bruise. Certainly not fun but nothing to worry about!

Hope it went well? If you havent yet had them it depends on the nurse tbh. I've had four injections over two pregnancies, bum and thigh. Its a huge needle and think bum is best Wink

Jab in the arse cheek ftw!! Fuk that getting it in the thigh!

I'd choose bum over thigh. Hope it went well Smile

Definitely bum for that injection. It will be the worst you will ever have but once it is over the pain does not hang around too long.

Bum. Tried both when I had them at 24 wks w DS2. Was told it would be like a bee sting. This was lies. The bee would have been as big as an orange.

Bum everytime. I grew up in Africa where malaria medicine was injected in bum or thigh and oh boy the thigh hurt a lot more!

Emmabombemma · 08/09/2013 18:55

Just had mine this weekend. Doesn't hurt (if you think it does god help you when birthing!). Liquid stings a bit when going in but not painful and certainly not sore after. I had them in the top of my leg. I don't think it matters where you chose but leg might feel more dignified :-) good luck x

Too late !!! I got it in the thigh. Bloody agony! I had DD naturally, and in a funny kind of way, the pain was worse than birth (I only had gas and air with her) as it feels exactly like a horrid chemical seeping into you, as opposed to contractions which feel, well, painful but not "something wrong" pain if you see what I mean... Anyway, it was over very quickly. Same again tomorrow though for the pre op....

i had bum and i have to say the pain was no worse than any other injection i've ever had.

maybe i have more cushioning there than i thought!

Emmabombemma · 09/09/2013 15:43

Best of luck for tomorrow OP. Let us know how you get on x

Oh legallyblond I agree wish there was g&a on offer! I think the first one was most horrible as I wasn't expecting it to hurt so much. For the second, I prepared myself, took a deep breath and breathed through the injection (pant pant pant) like I would a contraction. That, and the choice of buttock over thigh, made it much less horrible. I'd also been hanging around for blimming ages for the first one while they found a doctor willing to sign the drug sheet as my consultant hadn't sent me with one, in and out for the second. It all contributes. Think of the positive effects on your baby's lungs and that birth will seem a breeze in comparison.
