Can anyone offer some advice? - I am now 40+2 with my second baby and still waiting for labour to show any signs of starting!

I have been having strong Braxton Hicks for the last few weeks, been religiously taking Raspberry Leaf capsules and EPO capsules, been DTD, and then on Friday (@40wks) I had a sweep where the midwife was really really positive about my cervix and adamant I would go into labour that evening!
Since then I have had a bit of a show and some more Braxton Hicks but nothing remotely like the start of labour Sad
I just don't know why the sweep doesn't seem to have worked (it worked well with my DS, and also the midwife was so enthusiastic on Friday!)??
It's so hard to keep positive when you have everyone texting you demanding to know where their grandson/nephew/etc is isn't it! Angry

I'm pregnant with my first so I can't give you any tried and tested advice from personal experience, but had my last NCT class yesterday & the other home remedies included:

Pineapple
Chocolate
Chilli
(Chilli chocolate)
Walks up very steep hills ( God knows why but my NCT lady swore by it as very effective)
Driving on bumpy roads (not recommended for your car though!)
Anything that makes you relaxed & happy enough to release OxyContin

Some of those are more fun than others! I hope baby comes soon.

Oh my goodness I ate so much fresh pineapple last night my mouth is agony! Grin
I think you are definitely right about the 'being happy' thing; i think I probably need to relax and cheer up a bit tbh!
It's just so annoying that the lady got my hopes up like that saying I was about to go into labour that night! Confused

Grab a bar of chocolate, a box set of a good comedy & put your feet up!
I can't imagine how annoying it must be, but then I will find out for myself in about six weeks!
Another thing I remembered is foot massage or reflexology. Either treat yourself at a spa or find a lovely person to give you a foot & ankle massage. I hope it all works but if not at lease you got a nice massage & some chocolate Grin

None of the home remedies work (and the raspberry leaf is a uterine tonic to help the 2nd stage of labour). They categorically do not work. There's no harm in trying them because nothing terrible will happen but to take pineapple for example. The reason the myth grew up is that there's an enzyme in it which is also associated with the start of labour. But to replicate it, you'd need to eat 8 whole pineapples in one go, including the leaves and skin. You physically can't do it.

What worries me about all the myths is that why they won't harm you or your baby (except for things like castor oil perhaps), they won't work and might just make you feel demoralised and tired. Have sex and go on long walks and eat curry if you want. But don't force yourself to have sex you don't want, walk when you have spd or are in pain or eat a curry which will only give you indigestion and aggravate your haemorrhoids.

A normal pregnancy is 37-42 weeks and I know we have the arbitrary 40 week 'due date' to arrange care around but people become really sensitive about it. The pressure as soon as you hit 40 weeks is unwarranted and upsetting. Everybody is suddenly on your case when you're not even overdue and it's none of their business.

You can't influence the onset of labour because a baby comes when it's ready, as it should do. But I do think we could do more to encourage woman to feel confident in their bodies knowing what they should be doing instead of feeling they're late or failing or doing nothing. They're doing loads and loads and loads. They might not be labouring but the baby's not ready yet. Instead your body is finishing off the last bits, keeping the baby safe and protected until it's time.

A sweep will only work if labour was just about to start anyway. I think it has its place but if you are well and the baby is well, it might be worth thinking about why you'd need a sweep right now anyway? Of course if there are concerns and it is preferential that labour starts sooner, there is the option of a second sweep before they look at other options such as chemical induction.

The end bit is tough, particularly with well meaning friends and relatives making you feel like a ticking time bomb but really if you can find a way to enjoy these last days, then you should. And you should do what YOU want, not what you think will start labour, because nothing will. If you want to wallow and eat crisps, do it. It really won't be long, your baby is happy and safe inside you and your body is still doing incredible things even if you can't measure it against a scale of what happens during childbirth. Oxytocin does help. It helps you feel happy. And if you find it in the bottom of a cake or the bath, then so be it.

Good luck and tell people who ask for updates to bog off.

Thanks Show you are absolutely right and I definitely needed that talking to!
All those home remedies and old wives tales only work when the baby is ready to come and in which case the baby would have come anyway.

I'm just nervous because my first DC was born at 40+10 and was 9lb with the use if both ventouse and forceps, and so I am nervous about this baby being as big or bigger and the likelihood of another difficult labour, especially with each day that passes.

Ok I'll just try and relax a bit more - what will be, will be, and no amount of pineapple will likely change that.

....I want my new baby snuggles though! Wink

I understand your nerves completely. I had a terrible time first time round with ventouse, manual rotation and finally an emcs when none of that worked. Try not to worry too much about the size of the baby because the position of the head and the circumference of the head are what determine the ease of passage usually. My emcs were with a 7lber and a 6lber respectively. It wasn't the weight that was the problem but the position of their heads. I have friends who have had relatively easy deliveries with 10 and 11lb babies. It's hard to believe it when you're gripped by the fear of the unknown and the memories of last time, but realistically, there's nothing you can do to start labour and your body is pretty clever and knows what it's doing. My Mum said a while ago that she thinks it's harder nowadays to relax and let it happen because we're so used to having control and knowledge and ability at our fingertips and this is the one thing which you can't control.

The home remedies never work. Not even when labour is about to start anyway. Labour just happens to start naturally. A few women will eat pineapple beforehand yes, but this is coincidence. A million more will eat pineapple and not go into labour. And a few million more won't eat pineapple and will go into labour. I could make a really strong case for eating biscuits and going into labour. Happened with both of mine. Grin My evidence would be utterly anecdotal sadly. No harm in you trying it though. Grin

Best of luck. Regardless of when and how, I bet your baby is going to be ruddy marvellous.

tiggerishtom · 03/09/2013 21:31

I feel your pain... I am 41+2 and had a sweep yesterday, so far nothing other than a show!

Wish all of the above worked!

catinabox · 03/09/2013 22:41

Show Amazing post, thank you. EXACTLY what i needed to read. 40 + 6 and feeling under so much bloody pressure now.

Have been booked for induction but i really don't want it.

Hope it won't be too long for you starfish and tigger

Biscuitsneeded · 04/09/2013 09:20

Try another sweep. I had one at 40 + 5 with DS 1 and like yours my midwife was extremely positive it would all start, but it didn't. She came back at 41 +2 and did another in the late pm, and labour started in early hours of next morning and he was out by lunchtime, which I was very happy with for a first baby. Is your baby OP? Mine was and apparently that can delay the onset of labour.. Good luck. He will come out eventually! I do remember how miserable the nervous waiting is though...

Biscuitsneeded · 04/09/2013 09:22

PS Raspberry Leaf tea won't start labour but I am convinced it does make you labour more efficiently once your baby/body are ready.
