Driving to hospital

I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant with DC2, and the subject of getting to hospital has started to come up in conversation with DH.

DH keeps suggesting that once I go into labour, I should drive myself to hospital and then he'll meet me there, as this way I'll get to hospital faster and there'll be less need for him to worry about DC2 being born in a lay-by or suchlike.

I can't help feeling that me driving myself to hospital when I'm actually in labour and having contractions is a pretty bad idea and potentially dangerous, and have tried saying this to DH, but he doesn't seem to get why I think that I shouldn't drive myself.

I'm not being daft to think that driving in labour is a bad idea, am I?

What are you goign to do with your dc1? Who will be lookign after them and can they give you a lift to the hospital?

If your DH is concerned DC2 will turn up super fast then it makes it even more silly that he expects you to drive. As I said, what if you do drive yourself and you end up giving birth alone in a layby or worse, on the side of a road.... in rush hour? Shock

He really hasn't thought this through, has he?

Being in a car while in labour is sore, every little movement for me was so painful.. Especially driving around corners, I think my mum drove about 10 mph as I couldn't bear the pain if she drove any faster! I could have driven in early labour but like others have said if you can drive its probably too early to be heading to hospital.

Get a taxi! There's no way I could have driven, it's a ludicrous idea.

I would agree that if you can drive then you are probably going in pretty early.

Dh drove me and I have very amusing memories of it, speed bumps and contractons don't mix, we were in London and a few years ago now, when Ken had phased all the lights to make cars stop as they approached them, so we got every single red light and there was not a person or another vehicle in sight.

I always intended to write and complain but somehow never got round to it.

You'll be driving to the hospital when your contractions are 5 mins apart and you're breathless. That's really very unsafe and not sure how your insurance company, let alone hospital/you/others would feel about it. I'd suggest DH just picks you up!!
