Waters just broke! - 1st baby

MLS1978 · 29/08/2013 07:28

I've been up since 2:30am with a dodgy belly and generally feeling unsettled. I went to make cup of tea at 6:30 and my waters went! I was just checked by midwife yesterday because I thought they started to go on Tuesday, but everything was ok - just normal discharge. I've phoned the maternity hospital and she advised me to try and get some sleep since I've been up half the night. I know I should try to get some rest, but I'm too excited and worked up to sleep - any suggestions??

How many weeks pregnant are you?

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2013 07:40

Well, if you are me you' ll have a baby in about 6 hours. I' d get your bag ready, have some breakfast and give your community midwife team a ring at 9. My hospital likes to induce you 36 hrs after your waters have gone (assuming labour hasn' t started spontaneously), to reduce the risk of infection.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2013 07:41

Assuming that you are full termish. You sound too calm for this to be premature labour.

workingtitle · 29/08/2013 07:56

How exciting! Hope contractions begin soon.maybe go for a walk, use your gym ball (if you have one), some nipple stimulation..?!

ResNullius · 29/08/2013 08:02

May be a good idea to have someone over for coffee! (if OH isn't around)
Only because some women can go from waters breaking to transition quite quickly (DD was one) so I always think its smart to have someone on hand.

Good friends don't mind 8am coffee invites Smile

Thanks for the replies - I'm 39+5 so no panic there. Luckily DH works from home so at least I'm not freaking out on my own! Think I might try a bath in a bit - try to relax. I've read so many books, but still feel woefully unprepared!

Good luck! How exciting. This happened to me at 40+5. My contractions started right away but baby was another 30 hours, the little monkey. All straightforward and born at home though, lovely memories. I wish I'd eaten and rested a bit more at the start. bath and rest and eat and enjoy the moment. xxx

riskit4abiskit · 29/08/2013 09:14

Good luck!

Rooners · 29/08/2013 09:17

Not sure about baths? I think they are Ok if you're in labour, otherwise don't, as if it doesn't begin within a certain time then there may be a risk of infection - can anyone clarify as I am useless at this stuff!

Good luck OP - don't panic if it starts to hurt, you can manage it and you will not break in half. Smile

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 29/08/2013 10:11

Good luck!! Today is going to be one of those days that will stay with you forever (And on a practical note, put on some disposable maternity pants!)

MLS1978 · 29/08/2013 10:19

Oh well it's too late if I wasn't supposed to have a bath! I do feel much more relaxed now though. I keep getting that nauseous feeling like right before my period starts - is that the contractions starting?

Have a gentle walk out (with dh in tow). Gravity is a wonderful thing when we are talking childbirth! Best of luck to you, i felt a lovely pang of nostalgia reading your post.

Rooners · 29/08/2013 10:29

I think you should probably ring the MW or labour ward. Once your waters have broken they ideally like you to deliver within 24 hours, because it isn't great for the baby not to have any fluid around him or her.

So give them a call and let them know.

sparklekitty · 29/08/2013 10:37

Get moving, that should get the contractions going. Or bounce on a birthing/gym ball if you've got one.

I'm surprised they've not called you in, my labour ward wanted me in to check it was my waters and not that I'd wet myself! Grin it was def my waters, even DH heard the gush and splash as it hit the carpet

MLS1978 · 29/08/2013 10:43

I did ring the labour ward and they said they will have me come in tomorrow morning for a check up if nothing happening yet. They will let you go 96 hours here before inducing, which seems long to me (and to the midife I spoke to.) She just advised to try and get some rest and phone if anything changes. Oh, and there was no mistaking - this was definitely waters!

Oh good luck! Flowers Brew Cake

You are going to meet your baby soon! Wait until you smell that fuzzy wee head. I am jealous! Smile

SoonToBeSix · 29/08/2013 10:50

96 hours is too long please go in sooner.

MLS1978 · 29/08/2013 11:01

Soontobe - that's what I think too. Really don't want to be induced, but don't want to put her at unnecessary risk either. Hopefully it will all kick off naturally. The midwife said after 24 hours I have the choice to be induced, so we'll just see how it goes...

FaddyPeony · 29/08/2013 11:31

Mine went at 39+5 too OP. Hopefully that period pain feeling will intensify for you soon. Make sure you have food and drink in your bag! Update again if you get a chance.

Rooners · 29/08/2013 12:03

I think if nothing happens by this evening I'd just go and get monitored, make sure her heartbeat is fine and they can do an internal if you wish (though you may prefer not to) to see how far dilated you are.

I hope you avoid induction, I am all for waiting as long as you can but as long as you're having some kind of monitoring even if it's just taking your own temp regularly, and using a sonicaid thing.

MLS1978 · 29/08/2013 12:11

She did say they wouldn't do an internal exam because of the risk of infection, but said I could come in this evening for a check which I may do just for peace of mind. Still getting plenty of movement, so happy enough just now.

Faddy - thanks for the reminder, just popped some snacks and drinks in the bag. Smile

How exciting! All pain is good pain as it means you are one step closer to meeting your Bee-a-oo-tiful baby!!

Go with it! Good luck!

btw - upset tummies and sickness are all a (under-reported) sign. This could go quickly so hope you have your bag packed!!

TobyLerone · 29/08/2013 23:28

Have you had it yet, OP?! :o

ResNullius · 30/08/2013 20:52
