PanicPants · 17/06/2006 22:40

Don't, it's dangerous.

Flum · 17/06/2006 22:51

really what can it do?

OP posts:
PanicPants · 17/06/2006 22:55

Can't remember what exactly but I remember reading when I was pg not to take it, that it can make you, or you and baby very sick.

Try pineapple, curry, sex, raspberryleaf tea instead. Much more fun!

Laura032004 · 17/06/2006 22:56

I think it can trigger them into passing meconium can't it?

psychomum5 · 17/06/2006 22:59

I took it with DD1 and it set me off, but I was term + 10 days so would probably have started anyway. they were talking induction tho and I didn't want, so tried self induction. luckily in that case worked:)

tried with DD2, DD3, and DS2 (DS1 was early thro car accident:() tho, and did nothing except give my the runsBlush. inductions still went ahead, but I have to say, for me, the inductions went well and it was nice to kind plan the other children IYSWIM. Caster oil was each time tried the day before induction date.

Mind you, the stuff is truly hidious hidious hidious and made me sick. Even now typing this it brings the gagging feeling backWink.

reading you other thread tho...in your casre I would NOT recommend as you have had a previous c-section and so it could be dangerous. sorry:(.

hugs tho as in know what a PITA it can be going over dates.

fairydust · 17/06/2006 23:00

the castor oil can cause you to have the runs which in turn can cause you to get dhydrated (dh?) which can be damgerous for u and baby

Laura032004 · 17/06/2006 23:02

Also, if it works, I think the labour it induces can be fast and furious. Not ideal with a c/s scar, for the same reasons they're not keen on normal induction.

pinkmagic1 · 17/06/2006 23:15

How does it work? and what is the stuff normally sold for anyway?

Flum · 17/06/2006 23:16

mmm dh brought this idea home from cricket today.

we have tried all the other things - I really don't think they work.....

nevermind.

OP posts:
BamboozlesLover · 18/06/2006 17:06

have you tried taking golden seal or motherwort?

Flum · 18/06/2006 21:24

nahhh don't know where to buy such things...

just ate half a pineapple.

and dh says and I quote 'blimey I didn't have to work this hard to get you pregnant, they don't tell you about this end do they!'

castor oil has a similar effect to laxatives i think and you really don't want your first memory of ds/dd to be covered in poo! I was a week late and the raspberry tea thing had no effect. Also did the pineapple thing - if it's gonna work you need to eat all the pineapple lovey!! I would try a long vigorous walk - gravity gets things moving downwards!

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 21:53

Would I - yes
Could you - yes
Have you - yes - twice
Did it work - yes - twice - withoin hours
What do you want to know?

1st time 10 days late, downed a bottle mixed with oj - pooed a bit, nothing major went into labour, natural, no pain relief at all no probs.

2nd time - took same amount 3 days before my due date. Went into labour again, all almost exactly the same but this time at home and 2 hours faster.

Would do it again.

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 21:55

Oh and - ps - there is no poo left by the time you go into labour and just so you know I know about 8 castor oil kids and all the mums I know that did it once did it each time they were pregannt. never failed, never heard a bad word said about it by those that did it.

Not telling you to do it - just telling you how it is from where i'm sitting, my experience and that of the people I know that have done it.

schneebly · 18/06/2006 21:56

I didn't know about the dangers and tried it to trigger labour with DS1 - all it gave me was the most horrendous squits! It is dangerous because you can get dehydrated which is bad for you and the baby. With DS2 a curry, lost of trips up and down the stairs and sex got me going! Grin

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:04

DD1 - took whole bottle of castor oil at 7.30pm. Went into labour about 11.30pm and DD1 born 3.30am ish

DD1 took 1/2 bottle in the am. Nothing. Took 2nd 1/2 about 7.30pm again. Went into labour about 2am, baby born 6am ish.

1st time pooed a bit, grateful for the clear out!
2nd time - pooed a lot, bit more unpleasant but nothig I coudn't handle and nothing to complain about.

Glad I did it put it that way.

mumbum · 18/06/2006 22:06

I feel suitably reprimanded Thomcat! :)

At the end of the day Flum, your wee bub will make its debut when its ready and time will pass more quickly than you want it too.

Enjoy the time left with DH - have a warm bath together!

Flum · 18/06/2006 22:06

mmmmmm. interesting TC

OP posts:
Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:09

Oh no - I so wasn't reprimandany anyone, I really wasn't.
Didn't even really read anyone else posts just skimmed to get the jist of the vibe.
Listen, different strokes and all that man, whatever floats your boat.
did it for me, i'd do it again anyday but that's just me.

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:11

Sorry my typing / spelling is soooooo bad.

Flum - whatever you do kid - good luck and enjoy! Xxx

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:11

PS - I mean enjoy labour not the castor oil!

mumbum · 18/06/2006 22:11

Just teasing TC! I wanted to take castor oil but my mum was down from Scotland and wouldn't let me - she can be quite scary :)

Flum · 18/06/2006 22:12

am only in a hurry as hospital is desperate to slice me open and cut baby out and I would like to avoid another section if possible.

OP posts:
Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:16

Cool mumbum, cool. Smile I knew you weren't cross, but was worried oyu thought my post was in direct response to anything you said, which it wasn't.

Flum - yeah I was in a hurry as 10 days late and I so did not want to be induced, wanted it done my way, labouring at home for as long as poss and all that. DD2 was due so near Xmas I didn't want to go inbto labout on Xmas day I wanted her here with us so as it worked so well 1st time i got busy again.

Thomcat · 18/06/2006 22:19

mumbum - just read your post re poo - see what you mean now! And hey Flum - there's no guarantee you won't poo in labour but ther never is anyway, castor oil or not though tbh aye.
