I'm now 39 +2 and have started having the most excruciating back pain in bed at night. Tried all the usual pillow arranging business and am now at a loss for what to do to relieve it! Can't sleep and havne't slept for almost 3 days now. DH doesn't know what to do to help me as I'm shattered and irritable. Wish I could say it was contractions but it can't be as is only at night. :( HELP!

If you are in excrutiating pain, maybe your gynea will prescribe for you to be induced. It depends on your view of these things. I couldnt walk in the last two weeks and was wheeled around the hossy from clinic to ward in a wheel chair. When Gynea saw this he was furious that nobody had mentioned it as he would of induced me two weeks earlier as he said that nobody should endure this much discomfort.

when you get the pain, does it stay if you go onto your hands and knees or does it go away?

I only ask as at the end of my first pegnancy I used to sleep with my knees on a pillow (or 2) at the side of the bed with my head laying on the mattress. Not the most comfortable of sleeps but it was better than nothing.

will try the hands and knees thing tonight if the pain is still there. Got my tens on as we speak and it has improved things a little. If this carries on any longer I will contact the midwife for advice I think as it's been 3 days now and no longer funny!!

Like McKenzie, I used pillows to support my legs in bed. According to optimal foetal positioning you should like on your left-hand side, with your knees bent, right leg over left so both legs are on the bed (a bit like the recovery position in first aid). Worked for me.

HTH
