I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it.

Be interested to know if anyone has been this lucky? I guess you would have to have had an early one for the epidural to have worn off, based on my experience after emcs.

Thanks!

I believe my friend left less than 24 hours after, but the next day. She discharged herself and they weren't happy.
I wouldn't do this though - my blood loss and need for a transfusion was only discovered 48 hours after mine (but that was an emcs)

blueshoes · 09/08/2013 19:51

I was discharged 36 hours after my cs at my insistence as the post natal care at the hospital was so stretched and they refused to let my dh look after me because of strict visiting hours.

Believe me, I felt every bump on the road on the way home. It was too early for me. I would have preferred to stay longer had circumstances been different.

I think there are good safety reasons to stay at least overnight after a cs, if only for them to monitor you. Why do you want to be discharged so early?

turkeyboots · 09/08/2013 19:52

Nope and had 2 sections, one which was before 10am. The hospital won't let you go I think, unless you refused care - which would be mad as its a major operation.

Fairylea · 09/08/2013 19:54

I had an elcs and during the op they found out I had undiagnosed placenta previa. Ended up losing a lot of blood and ended up staying in for a week. Totally unsuspected, was meant to be a routine maternal request one! Doctors were astounded. So yes I was unlucky but I wouldn't bank on anything.

hardbeingme · 09/08/2013 20:02

emcs 8am monday and home wednesday afternoon, elective on tuesday 8pm and home friday - no available dr on thurs to sign me out as otherwise it would've been then.
in both cases i was left very anaemic and given a course of iron tablets but no transfusions. no other complications and i was up and about (albeit gingerly) and able to shower before i left.

AmandinePoulain · 09/08/2013 20:02

I had mine at 9am (a year ago tomorrow Smile) and went home the next day, after lunch. I could barely walk the evening after the op, let alone manage at home! And I had a really good recovery, I was walking to the park and back 10 days post op, and doing the school run on foot (a hilly mile) when school restarted 3 weeks later.

I think you need to expect to stay in overnight to be honest.

FixItUpChappie · 09/08/2013 20:04

God I would NEVER do this. The first day you might feel okay as all that pain medication is still in your system....second day it all starts to wear off. I was in lots of pain the second day after both of my sections. This last one I was a total fainting mess the second day and needed lots of help getting to and from the bathroom. It would not have been safe to have been at home.

Besides...there are bandages to be removed, staples to be removed etc etc. Take the time to rest, bond with baby while you have some help and don't rush it is my suggestion.

poocatcherchampion · 09/08/2013 20:55

Just wondering really. I'd like to not stay in more than one night, dd will be at home and is only little and I didn't love being in hospital last time after a rough long labour. Sooner I'm home with my big baby and support network the better.

I had mine at 9am in the morning and I was in for 3 days. They wouldn't take my catether out until 24hrs after surgery

4 nights/5 days where I live. Hospital is amazing so I shall be quite happy to stay there!

nailslikeknives · 09/08/2013 22:25

No, and I was the first one of the day - arrived at 7, birth at 9.25, out of recovery area by 11am and on ward, so all went v smoothly. Couldn't stand until the next morning. Was v happy to spend 2 nights there.

OpheliaBumps · 09/08/2013 22:33

Same as nails, elcs at 9.37, catheter in till the next morning, went home on day 3. Really wasn't fit to leave before then, even though I was desperate to get home as the ward was so noisy.

iliketea · 09/08/2013 23:10

I had an emcs (after 5 days induction). Born at 10am, d/c 48hrs later. That may have been because Dd was fine and I told them I was going, so they agreed with me. I was anaemic so was given iron tablets to go home with. To be fair, if the care had been reasonable, I would have probably been better staying for another night, but I was much better looked after at home.

e.g. 3 hrs after c-section, was told i had to walk to the communal lounge to collect my lunch - epidural hadn't even worn off yet and no one would bring me any so I had to wait for dh to come back (he'd popped home for some clean pjs and other stuff) so he could buy me something as food had already been taken away by then. Quite frankly the care was shite, so I was better off at home.

rallytog1 · 10/08/2013 09:02

Oh goodness, I think that would be madness. One night might be do-able if everything is straightforward and you're bouncing back particularly well. However I think for most people two nights is the norm.

LibraryBook · 10/08/2013 09:10

I had a c-section at noon and went home the following day at 2pm.

TheCokeMachine · 10/08/2013 09:48

I had my elective at 11am on Monday and was home by 2pm Tuesday. I seem to recover easily from c-sections.

The hospital were happy to let me go as I was walking around normally and begging go be allowed home to see DD1.

lucybrad · 10/08/2013 18:55

no first time 5 days second time two days. Couldn't walk till pm second day both times.

noblegiraffe · 10/08/2013 19:06

I had my ELCS at 3:30pm. The next morning I still had a catheter in and they asked if I was hoping to be discharged that day. I looked horrified and said no. They said that some women requested to leave but agreed with me that it was more sensible to recover a bit longer. I'd had an EMCS previously and knew what it was like. Later that day I fainted in the shower (very common) so I'm glad I hadn't tried to go home. I felt much better the next day.

TeaCuresEverything · 25/08/2013 23:08

I had ds by elcs at 11am on the Monday, and was home by 8pm on the Tuesday. I discharged myself because I hadn't been able to get a wink of sleep in the hospital, and I hadn't slept all of the Sunday night either through nerves, so was practically delirious with tiredness and so desperate for my bed. I wouldn't do it again though I'd stay another night. My poor dh had so much to contend with that night - I was too out of it and in agony to do anything other that bf ds when he was hungry, my dh was up with him all night, in addition to being beside himself with worry about me. I was just scared by the whole experience and I'd definitely spend 2 nights if there is ever a next time

Damnautocorrect · 25/08/2013 23:18

I discharged myself sort of the next day (baby born early morning) so I spent that day and night in then the day after discharged myself. So 36ish hrs
I was better off at home even though I was on my own during the day (no paternity leave) but at least I could rest.

Somethingpink · 25/08/2013 23:19

Had 2 c - sections and both times I was discharged 3-4 days later even though I felt fine (hospital policy).
I was discussing this with my consultant and this time it should be very different for me, they are now trying to discharge all c - section patients within 24 hours now (all being well). I am personally happy with this as I want to be out of hospital for my dds birthday 3 days after my c-section and i felt ready to leave before 3 days before, but I can understand that some people just don't feel ready. In that case it should be that women get to choose if they can stay or go.
