Post-birth complications

DD (my second child) was born four months ago. Labour was manageable and had a natural delivery, spent some time in birthing pool at hospital but was on dry land for the actual birth!

Just as we were all settling down afterwards, it all started to go wrong. DD was fine, but my pulse rate and blood pressure had shot up and I was rushed to HDU. I had lost quite a bit of blood and had a transfusion a couple of days later, but also had maternal sepsis. This was basically explained as an infection that had got out of hand and was in the bloodstream, a form of septicaemia.

It was awful, I really thought I was going to die, the doctors were talking about possibilities of cardiac arrest etc. Thankfully I am fine and DD also fine, but it keeps coming back to me.

Does anyone know a bit more about how these sorts of infections can happen? Should I go to my doctor? I just want to find out more about why or how it happened, it came out of the blue. Is it possible to access my notes or would that be silly to ask?

Sorry, I know there are people worse off but it does still upset me.

You can ask the hospital for a copy of your notes. you can also get someone to talk through them with you. Ring your hospital to find out how you go about it.

I'm glad you and your DD are okay. Sounds like you had a horrible experience and the way you're feeling is completely normal.

Thanks too Monsters - yes I feel so relieved we are both ok, just feel the need to get some kind of closure. I keep getting these kind of nightmare flashbacks of being on a trolley with about ten medical staff rushing around. Think I will do as you say and ask the hospital - I need to understand what happened and it's all a blur.
