If you've been told by a consultant that you won't make it to the hospital in time when in labour but also you're not eligible due to medical reasons for a home birth. What on earth do you do?

Like the title says I'm not pregnant and don't plan to be again for a few years but I have 3 children and the last two labours were astonishingly quick, I happened to be an inpatient both times or I wouldn't have made the hospital.

My problem is that I don't know I'm in labour, I never feel contractions until may waters break as the baby crowns.

DS2 was born in 20 minutes from the time I realised delivery was happening.

DS3 was born in the lift going from antenatal ward to labour ward in about 6 minutes from waters breaking, I had NO hint of contractions before that and even the monitor to record babies hb and contractions didn't pick anything up.

I was advised that I wouldn't get to the hospital in time for future births, especially now I love further away from the hospital.

However I'm really not a candidate for a home birth due to pre existing health conditions, now obviously this is something to bare in mind before thinking about future babies. Any ideas?

Elcs?
Planned induction shortly before your due date?

To be honest, even if you were suitable for a home birth, a mw might not get to you in time.

I am interested to know too.

You/your consultant/midwife need to way up the risk of your medical conditions and why a home birth is not advised. What exactly is the risk? Safer to be at home with mideufe and paramedic crew rather than deliver in a car in the middle of a road!!! If you are too high risk for a home birth then hospital admission to await delivery may be an option. Induction or CS seem very drastic interventions and I can't imagine an obstetrician agreeing to this on the basis if previous labours.

I don't think a midwife would get here for a home birth! I'm classed as high risk because I am extremely hyper mobile which buts me at a greater risk of hemhorage, I also take a daily anti coagulant whilst pregnant a due to a few previous DVT and PE during pregnancy. I'm also in need of anti D post birth. I usually give birth anytime between 36 and 39 weeks.

Oh my god I hate you out of jealousy right now! How amazing to get through labor without even feeling it!!!!!

Out of curiosity, what was your first birth like?

Can you stay somewhere closer to the hospital around the time that you are to give birth? It sounds like your first two births went perfectly fine (aside from probably shocking you that they were actually taking place!), I definitely wouldn't go for something as drastic as a ELCS, but maybe an induction would be best? Does your husband know what he needs to do in case there is a surprise arrival? Can he take a basic training class or something just in case?

Ellen7 · 30/07/2013 17:30

In light of your medical conditions and birth history I would have assumed myself that they would say you'd have to stay in hospital from 36 weeks til you give birth. I mean it's not unusual to have to go into hospital early and wait, although the practicalities would be a pain maybe x

Titsalinabumsquash · 30/07/2013 17:50

I kind of wish I did feel it! Midwives always give me this look >> Hmm when I suddenly drop a baby out of no where, it's always a shock, everyone says "oh but you must have felt something?" But I really, really don't, I'm not particularly poetry or anything either I just don't get any warning signs, no show, no funny feelings or niggling pain just nothing.

I think maybe ill ask someone at the hospital before we start tic next time, my main worry is suddenly giving birth while its just me and DS here.

When I was having DD, there was a woman in who was being induced because she lived 1.5 hours away from the hospital and her last labour was 45 mins Shock
So they might just schedule early induction in hospital?

CheeseFondueRocks · 30/07/2013 19:55

Early induction is my guess as well.
