Hi all

I went for a growth scan last night as they thought I might be having a big baby and it turns out that 1 he is big and 2 the liquor around it looked thick /dense...

The report was assessed by a doctor straight away and they put me on monitors and explain that it is probably meconium in the waters and they need to look before they can tell how bad it is Sad

I went back to monitors this morning and the baby seems happy enough so I am hoping he will be ok...

Midwife told me that they would induce me with the gel and try 3 doses and if it doesn't work I'll have a cesarean.

Does anyone have experiences like this and how did it go for you? did your baby inhale the poo and if so how were they?

Sorry for the long post I am so scared I thought I was just going for a scan. ..

Thanks xx

Some similarities here. I was induced - not because of meconium, but I ended up having an emcs because it transpired there was thick meconium in my waters and the baby was distressed (sounds like yours isn't at this point, which is great).

Baby is absolutely fine. They were concerned about inhalation/infection at first, so she spent several hours in SCBU, had a lumbar puncture and precautionary antibiotics. Either she didn't inhale it or the abs knocked any infection on the head (not sure which), as she was back with me after a few hours. She then had frequent observations in hospital for a couple of days but was on the post-natal ward with me rather than scbu. Obviously none of that was great at the time but she was in the best place and, three months on, it seems like a very small part of our birth experience.

My impression is that it's better if the doctors are aware of the meconium issue before delivery (as they are with you), as the precautionary abs etc can be administered straight away.

DD is now a very healthy and happy 3 month old so there have been no long-term effects and bonding etc has been fine, despite the time apart after she was born.

Keeping everything crossed for you - hope it all goes fine and you have your lovely healthy baby in your arms v soon x

I had labour augmented due to meconium with dc1 and I was induced because of meconium with dc2.

There was some drama with dc1 but I think that was mainly down to her position. Dc2's birth was the easiest ever! I had to stay in 24 hours with both for them to be monitored due to the meconium issue but all was absolutely fine with both of them. Good luck and try not to worry too much (easier says than done, I know!) x

hiya...
I thought I'd come back and update you all since you took time to give me some reassurance last week Smile

A bit of a long post but wanted to share my birth experience.

As per my OP I was asked to go to hospital last Saturday to be induced due to thick liquor on my 39 weeks scan.

They gave me the gel to start the induction at around 11pm. I had a few period like pains overnight but nothing too bad.

At 8am Sunday my waters broke on their own which was good but contractions were all over the place so they decided I needed to go on the drip and was given an epidural.

8 hours later and I had only dilated 2 cms Sad there were concerns as the baby's heartbeat was losing strenght... In the end I went up to 9cms and was almost ready to push at 3am but they took a blood sample from baby's head and saw he was distressed and didn't have a lot of oxygen so they had to do emergency cesarean Confused

apparently the baby was born a bit limp but cried on his own and didn't need resuscitation. In the end the meconium was not an issue for either of us, we stayed in hospital for 3 nights to be observed but all good although the whole experience was pretty scary!

I had my baby boy on Monday at 4.12am and he is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seenSmile

I just wanted to thank all the ladies in MN for all the support through my pregnancy I will no doubt be asking lots of questions about the baby now!

Congratulations gioti! I've been wondering how you were doing. Your story sounds similar to mine in many ways - so glad it's all turned out well and you have a lovely little boy. Enjoy getting to know each other :)
