Anyone induced due to no contraction for first baby had spontaneous labour for subsequent births?

Hello, I wonder if anyone had to be induced due to water breaking but no contraction with their first baby and then went on to have a spontaneous labour with their subsequent babies? With my first baby my hindwaters broke at 38+1 and because I had no contractions I had to be induced after 24hr with pessary and drip. Even with the drip it took a long time for my contractions to become regular, baby was distressed, it all spiralled out of control ending up with epidural, forceps, third degree tear. Very traumatic experience. I am now expecting baby number two and very worried that I may end up with another induction + instrumental birth. I just have no faith in my body being able to do it all without medical intervention! Can anyone help??

induced with first two, had ELSC with 4th, but DCs 3, 5 & 6 started off after a a sweep or two.

so don't despair, there's no reason you'll need to be induced again!Wink

I was induced by drip with my first. No pessary, can't remember why... I was 41+11. Forceps, tear, big PPH, subsequent infections etc etc..

With my second, I went to 41+9, saw the GP who insisted on booking me in for am induction the next day, and my body responded by going into labour that night. All good. Small tear, totally different.

induced with ds1 a couple of days before due date because I had pre eclampsia. Several lots of the induction drugs, they were just about on the point of saying that it was going to be a CS as nothing was happening, had taken 24 hours to get to about 3cm dilated. I was in lots of pain screaming for epidural, they were telling me that i had to wait, the speed I was going at (or not going at!) it was too early for an epidural, it was going to be hours and hours before I could have one (and they wouldn't even put me onto the waiting list for the anesthetist which at that point was at least an hour!). Finally I start pushing at which point they all say no no, much to early to push, got to wait hours to do that yet... and I couldn't help myself so they finally checked and surprise surprise, I was fully dilated and baby was crowning. They then had the bloody cheek to say 'ooh fast dilation - that must have been really painful, why didn't you say something?' No shit Sherlock - like I hadn't been screaming in pain for the previous hour and they kept telling me that nothing was wrong, was going to be lots and lots worse, hours in front of me yet HmmAngry

ds2 - turned up 2 weeks early, no induction needed. Lovely MW who knew of my past history - I'd gone to out patients for an appointment as they were worried my PE was coming back, contractions started just before I got there, had to wait to see consultant who wanted to send me home and to come back in later on - despite the fact that I was having 3 contractions back to back and only a few moments between each set of contractions. MW were all whizzing around trying to order a wheelchair to take me up to the delivery ward as I couldn't walk (just curled up in a ball of pain) and trying to find a delivery kit in case the baby came before the wheelchair did. Grin

As it was, I did make it to the delivery ward, baby turned up about 20 minutes later, MW was able to tell me as I was screaming in pain that I was about 10-15 mins away from delivering, explain it was the baby crowning etc. which made it a whole lot more bearable knowing it was going to be over so soon - whereas at the same point with ds1 (at a big London teaching hospital) they were telling me that the pain was going to get significantly worse, I'd got hours to go, I couldn't have any pain relief, I wasn't really in pain etc which made the whole thing horrific as when you're in so much pain being told that it's going to go on for lots longer and get worse, your brain has problems processing that as you just want it to stop.

So yes - second delivery for me was much better!

Good luck with yours Grin

Hi I wasn't induced ( refused it ) but had a delay of over 48 hours between waters breaking and contractions starting with DC1.
Gave birth to DC2 5 weeks ago - my waters only went during very short second stage.
Whole labour was about 3.5 hours from first niggle to delivery - didn't even make it to hospital !!

As others have said - very different !

Have faith and good luck ...

Hi there,

I had PROM with DD but no contractions were forthcoming. So, 4 days later (stayed in hospital, antibiotics etc) finally there was a space on the delivery suite for me to be induced. Delay was good in a way as DD was finally born at 36+6 so the extra days were useful. Anyway, straight to drip and she rocked along in a few hours.

With DS, my waters went at 37+4, in the evening, active labour started next morning and came on fast, got to hospital, jumped in the pool and out he popped (back to back - luckily for me as it happens or he'd have arrived in the car I think!).

So, second births can definitely be spontaneous and problem free!

Best of luck!

With my 1st 2 pregnancies my waters broke on my due date, no contractions so got the drip the next day. My 3rd, I went into labour myself (8 days late).

Taffeta · 01/08/2013 21:11

Yes first one waters broke and no contractions so was induced. 36 hours, epidural, ventouse, episiotomy etc.

Second one massive contraction out of nowhere at midnight, got to hospital at 1.16am, had DD standing up at 1.20am. Grin

Thanks a lot for your replies, nice to hear some positive stories! I have just found out that I am GBS+ so if my waters go again I will be advised to have an induction straight away, which I really don't want! So finger crossed they will stay intact until close to the end this time!!

Testing postive doesn't mean you have to be induced, if you don't want to. Neither does having loss of waters for any length of time. www.aims.org.uk/Journal/Vol12No3/gbs.htm might be of interest, also www.aims.org.uk/Journal/Vol15No4/WarOnGroupBStrep.htm

Certainly your body can do it :) There are lots of reasons why it didn't labour when your waters broke, but it would have, in time. If you want to talk things through, give AIMS a ring and have a chat with an AIMS volunteer. www.aims.org.uk/contact.htm
