Recommendation for waterproof mattress cover, please? <grim>

In my first pregnancy I bled a lot, for a long time - I also leaked a lot of milk (lovely) and ended up sleeping on towels etc.

This time I'm looking for something I can put under my sheet to protect the mattress but it's also comfortable (I intend to co-sleep again so baby would be next to me).

Mattress is super king, but realistically would just need to cover my side; has anyone used something like this please?

Try Hippychick mattress protectors...v comfy to lie on underneath sheet and waterproof. Quite pricey but worth the money!

I can tell you that the Dunelm kingsize one for £15 made me sweat rather a lot and got removed pretty quickly.

In fairness I did manage to keep it on for the last couple of weeks of pregnancy as I was really paranoid about waters. It was December. Even so, god I was hot. It was removed a day or so after I got home - I decided I would buy a new mattress if it came necessary!

If you are co-sleeping (bad plan already in terms of SIDS) then you shouldn't really have anything waterproof under the area where the baby will be in case it rolls/gets rolled onto front and can't breath through the protector. That is why no protectors for moses baskets and other new-born specific things.

You might be able to get something to cover just the middle of the bed... but unlikely to get anything safe AND waterproof for the milky part!

Sorry.

Hippychick. It's very soft and breathable and will last until DCs are dry at night. If you have a tight fitted sheet it will hold it in place flat against the mattress.

Beehatch · 05/07/2013 21:53

The hippychick covers are great. Or you could consider getting a cheap mattress topper and chuck it away once you are finished leaking. They are not waterproof, but should be thick enough to protect the mattress.

I bought these for my kids' beds when they were being toilet trained. We still use them now 10 years later for guests when needed (dd has a friend who pees the bed when she laughs too hard). They are nice because the waterproofing is on the underneath side (towel material on top), so not only do they feel fine, BUT they don't look like waterproofing protector so isn't embarrassing for an older child (or adult!).

I will echo the others' view on Hippychick covers. They make them in all mattress sizes available (including cotbeds), they feel lovely, are not sweaty and ARE breathable.

And if you have previously co-slept, I'm sure you're aware of the dos and don'ts, and how to make it as safe as possible. (I also co-sleep part of the night with my breastfed baby - it has made breastfeeding much easier and he's a very content and happy baby in general!).

Good luck! X

Thanks everyone.

DD has a Hippychic and I love it because it doesn't "rustle" and it's breathable, but I didn't know they came in larger sizes so that's brilliant news!

Also great idea to get a cheap mattress to supplement Beehatch.

Thanks, OdaBear. We have a bedside nest and also do part-time co-sleeping; it's brilliant when you're breastfeeding. Smile

Ginger, co-sleeping is very safe in terms of SIDS prevention when done properly (depending whose statistics you read, it's can actually be safer); it's "accidental" co-sleeping incidents that constitute the biggest danger.
