Anxious about delivery

I'm getting rather anxious about baby coming along. (I'm 33 wks)
My labour with DS took about 6 hours (From when I got to the hospital to when I actually gave birth). They say that second babies tend to arrive much faster. Well, This weekend I got talking to my SIL's - all three of them, and spoke to them about their second children and how long their labour was. To cut a long story short all of them seemed to say that their 2nd children hadn't taken long to deliver at all. (One of my SIL's didn't even make it to the hospital, and my neice was born on the bathroom floor!) Shock
Although I can't see this happening to me, what I can see happening is that baby is born on the way. The hospital that I'm delivering at is at least 45 mins away!!!
How can I ensure that I get there with lots of time to spare?
What happens if we get stuck halfway there and bub decides to put in an appearance? Sad
Spoken to the MW, who hasn't really said too much to put me at ease.

i feel the same worries at the moment. i am 39 weeks today. first labour was 32h, been told again and again it will be a lot quicker. my SIL had her second child delivered by paramedics at home as it all happened so fast. luckily we're only about 10 minutes from the hospital.

dinosaure · 30/05/2006 12:22

Sunita, I think even short labours last more than 45 minutes, so I would have thought you'd be okay, although obviously it would be wise to make sure that you are in a complete state of readiness so that you can leave straightaway if you think your labour is starting.

Who is looking after your DS for you - can you have them teed up to come straight away?

My second labour was short - waters broke at 4.30 p.m., started having contractions around 6 p.m. , DS2 was born at 8.17 p.m. - but I would have had time to get to a hospital that was 45 minutes away.

acnebride · 30/05/2006 12:23

a few days after my first quick labour, I was chatting to the midwife and she said that if I ever did it again she would set me up for a home delivery even if I wanted a hospital birth, so that there wouldn't be a worry either way. Admittednly she's since gone independent as she loathes hospital births, but do you think you or your midwife team would consider this?

MarsLady · 30/05/2006 12:26

Sunita, try not to worry yourself about what might and might not happen to you. My first 3 took 6.5hours each.

Do you have someone with you? A friend, sister, SIL at all?

I know it's easy to say, but don't worry. Chances of the baby being born on route are very slim.

azroc · 30/05/2006 12:33

Just make sure you have everything ready and planned and don't worry. We live about 45mins from the hospital where I had ds2 and dd2 and I was worried about being late, also about going too early (hate hospitals, didn't want mother worrying for longer than necessary, couldn't bear going in for false alarm!!etc). Make sure you can set off when contractions turn into CONTRACTIONS if you know what I mean - the first one to take your breath away generally means business. Have a phone with you so you can call for help if necessary, but I think your body will give you enough warning if you are concerned about it. Good luck!!
And if little one is born in the car/shop/lift/train station, it will give him/her something to boast about later!Smile

I worry aboutthis too. Nearest family to look after ds are 3 hours away and I can't very well ask my mum to move down here for 2/3 weeks around the due date when baby could come anytime!!

azroc · 30/05/2006 12:56

Bring back cottage hospitals and close-knit communities!!!

TuttiFrutti · 30/05/2006 13:33

Sunita, have you considered a home birth? That would take away your anxieties about getting to the hospital in time. 6 hours isn't THAT quick and it might take the same or just slightly less for a 2nd labour, but you never know.

My cousin took all of 10 minutes to deliver her 2nd baby on the back seat of the car, but neither of them was any the worse for it! It says "on the Portsmouth Road" as place of birth on his birth certificate! Smile The midwives told her she must go for a home birth if she had any more, and baby no 3 was delivered at home recently.

Pruni · 30/05/2006 15:27

Acnebride I bet we had the same midwife - name begins with M, double-barrelled surname?

hello everyone, im new to this site but needing some help, im realllllly nervous about going into labour just want it to be over, my due date is today!! any suggestions how i culd get things moving?!?!?!? xxx

666mummy · 30/05/2006 16:07

sunita, my heart goes out to you, we're all in the same boat tho, your not alone.

sunita123 · 31/05/2006 15:28

Thanks for your replies ladies,

Went to see the MW. Who now informs me that baby is breech. If baby doesn't turn in the next 3 Weeks they may have to do a CS.

Well at least if I have a CS I won't have to worry about getting to the hospital on time because they won't let me get to 40 Weeks and will deliver the baby beforehand.
Having said that I'm not too keen on having a CSection either!!!

I know there is a possibility that baby could still turn. Infact I'm hoping that it will.
But if it does then I'm back to my original worry of delivering on the way.

I haven't thought of a home delivery as yet as MIL is going to come and stay with us before baby is born and so she will be looking after DS.
I'm having a scan in 2 weeks time so that will tell me which position baby is in. But until then I'm just going to be spending a lot of time on all fours.

DH just says "It'll be alright," which I know it will but just can't see past the delivery just yet. I do feel as if I'm having a moan when there are people out there having more serious problems then me. I'm trying to see the bright side but all I see is problems.

Sorry if TMI, but I do feel that I need to get things off my chest. (And "talking" to you lot does make me feel better.)

sunita, il be thinking of you. i hope all goes well for you.

sunita123 · 01/06/2006 20:55

666mummy - Thanks for your concern.
All I can do now is try to make baby turn and wait until Mid-June when I have my next scan. Only then will they be able to really tell baby's position.
Good luck to you on your impending birth.

Yes thanks,

I've been trying some positions to make baby move.
Can feel some Movement, just don't know if it's in the right direction.

Shall be watching out for the birth announcements for you. All the best.

sunita123 · 26/06/2006 22:28

Just an update.

Baby has now turned and is head down. Spoke to the Cons. about my anxiety and she asked if I had thought about a Homebirth.
Also spoke to my MW who seems O.K. with the idea of a HB.
The MW informs me that I can be booked for a HB, and still go to the Hosp in an Amb.
