c-section - how long should you leave before TTC?

Hope I haven't created this convo 3 times!

I know the standard answer is 12 months but how long did you leave if you had a previous c-section and if under 12 months, did you have any problems?

Not quite answering your question, but I had three different answers (not at all, 12 months, and 24 months) to that question from three different medical staff before I was even discharged from hospital, so I'm not sure how standard the 12 months advice is anyway...

from \link{www.caesarean.org.uk\www.caesarean.org.uk} -
"Research has looked at different gaps between pregnancies from those grouped as "less than 6 months" up to those grouped as "longer than 2 years". The risk of uterine rupture or of the scar separating remains small even with small intervals, but gaps of less than 6 months had the highest risk."

I had a 2-yr gap (2yr9mo between babies) and the flipping scar still opened up a bit (discovered during 2nd cs).

Thanks for this fruitful - some really interesting stuff - the photos are very reassuring! I am just a little nervous as my sil was one of the rareities and had a rupture whilst being induced (15 months after previous c-section). She had to have a hysterectomy at the age of 23 and her daughter now has cerebral palsy as a result of being deprived of oxygen. This was 14 yrs ago so hopefully procedures have changed.

Oh, that's terrible Rach69. I , personally, would never be induced. Don't care how small the risk, the consequences are unthinkable. Anyway, I've had 2 section. First was emergency, second was elective. They are 26 months apart. I had no trouble with the scar.

Uwila - I'll never be induced again either! IF I have number 5(!) it will probably be an elective caesarian because I always go 2 weeks over and no-one is coming near me with syntocin again and distressing my baby! My poor babies just aren't ready to come out and forcing them doesn't make them any keener!

isnt it 3yrs before you ttc when you had an emergency c-section?

No-one said a thing to me about when to TTC after my section. I have since heard 12m, but I think I needed that long to recover, however the birth had gone!

biglips - as per my em c/s no one ever suggested that (see previous post). Most "emergency" c/s aren't that functionally different from electives anyway (I can see if might be different if you had a "true" emergency crash, g/a, get this baby out NOW no matter what emergancy c/s, but most are "OK, we weren't originally intending to do this, but let's approach this as a c/s case now" so no different in terms of surgical recovery from an elective c/s. (btw, whatever else happens no one is touching me with syntocin ever again I'm happy with natural VBAC or with c/s but that's a big no-no)

I think there is a range of views on this topic in the medical world. Obviously, the longer you wait the better the healing of the scar, and hence the strength. I have heard everything from 12 months to 3 years. But, interestingly, I have never been advised by a midwife or doctor on this matter after having the first section. You'd think that if there's a guideline, then they would tell you about it in your paost natal post-section care. I do however remember the surgeon coming to see me the day after the section and telling me that I couls still try to deliver vaginally next time. I just remember thing "next time?!?! I'm never having sex again".

The midwife who saw me at home after my second child (elective section) did tell me you are suppose to wat 3 years after having a section. And I said "hmmm, it's a bit late now."

Shock at 3 years!!!

3 years! I think lots of people would be Shock at that! I suppose the principle is that if you have a weak scar then it would be vulnerable however long you left it. I would prefer a VBAC obviously but can't see me going into labour on my own (I never have before within the two weeks!) and they will not be inducing me!

No one said anything to me either! I have a 16mth gap, and the midwife (in the delivery suite) wasn't happy that I was induced. Turns out that I wasn't either - I don't know what possessed me to agree to syntocin. Anyway, another c-section later it doesn't seem to have caused me any great troubles. It hurts when I sneeze, and I have an inch or so with no feeling, but that's about it.

Glad that I'm not the only one to feel that way about induction. I was induced at a supposed 41weeks and spent 23 hours failing to progress, only getting to 2cm - it was agony! Ended up with emergency c-sec, it's a long story.
Remember telling DH when recovering that our DS would be an only child, however, pain seems to be forgotten and I'd like to TTC this year. Interesting to find out how long I should wait though, health more important i suppose.

My baby was not ready for the world either. Bloody induction Angry
