I bought a Birth Pool In A Box. It was fab IME. I delivered both DD and the placenta in it (not both at the same time, obviously :o)

Show off

I had a lovely birth anyway - got to pick my baby up off my lounge floor, and relax on my sofa cuddling him (without having to climb out of the pool so there! Wink).

:( I am still a bit miffed about my pool. Was a lovely waterbirth with DD.

flamesparrow · 09/05/2006 09:58

It also distracted me during labour - I spent an hour or so walking back and forth with bowls of water filling the thing Grin

climbing out is bloody horrible so you didnt miss anything there

also I got out halfway through to have a wee and man, was that contraction BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

agalch · 09/05/2006 10:03

Enid, how soon after having your baby did you get out the pool? Thats the only thing putting me off atm,if the pools very messy i don't want to be sitting in it too long.Did you get out to deliver placenta and did you have syntomentrine? Sorry just trying to find out as much as i can before deciding on the pool.

you can get out whenever you like as long as baby is warm enough - we were a bit worried that she wasn't staying that warm so I got out. The water wasnt messy at all.

I didnt have syntometrine and delivered the placenta on the bed (messy!)

SoupDragon · 09/05/2006 10:06

I got to cuddle DD in the pool whilst waiting for the cord to stop pulsating. Then they weighed her etc and my mum got to hold her whilst I delivered the placenta in the pool. I guess I was in the pool for around 30 minutes after delivering DD. Still had a hose from the hot tap so kept topping it up :)

SoupDragon · 09/05/2006 10:07

placenta in the pool = no mess!! Well, apart from in the pool.

SoupDragon · 09/05/2006 10:08

One thing to consider is what sort of boiler do you have? Combination or one witha hot water tank? They take a lot of water. Our boiler is a combi one so was perfect - hot water on demand.

Enid · 09/05/2006 10:08

I had to gte out to deliver placenta as the cord broke off it Shock

Enid · 09/05/2006 10:09

we had a non-combi and it only took 45 mins to fill and as long as you keep the hot wter switched on we had no probs topping it up (needed to twice in a 2.30 hour labour)

SoupDragon · 09/05/2006 10:09
Shock

DD had tied a knot in hers! MW didn't seem at all concerned about it so must have been a loose one. I didn't look.

flamesparrow · 09/05/2006 10:11

Shock Mine fell out within 2 mins of him being born... was very bizarre - we moved me to a better position to have the injection, and realised it was already on the floor (again messy - it missed the mats we had down!)

agalch · 09/05/2006 10:27

Will be downstairs so no bed to deliver on anyway, pool sounds like the better option = less mess.mw not keen to give syntometrine if i deliver in water?? but this is my 4th and the placenta gets harder to deliver the more babies you have(so i heard).

one good push an dit was out (and normally they have a cord to pull on)

agalch · 09/05/2006 10:43

we have constant hot water so no probs there. It is so good to know there are actually people who have had babies at home,i don't know anyone in rl who has.

be prepared to be a local celebrity (well among midwives anyway) for a while!

SoupDragon · 09/05/2006 12:13

Oooh yes "Ahh... you're the home waterbirth!"

Doesn't last. I'm ignored completly now. Sigh.

Don't forget my favourite bit - your home address on the birth certificate. For my Mythical Fourth Child (completely mythical!) I'm going to try and give birth somewhere posh. Like Buckingham Palace on a tour maybe?
