Maternity pads for post-birth bleeding

Awhile ago I read a thread where people gave suggestions/recommendations for good maternity pads but also alternatives that were absorbent and comfortable. I can't for the life of me remember their suggestions but am starting my shopping list and wondered if anyone had any good advice?

I used the Boots ones which were pretty good, and then switched to Always nighttime when the packet ran out.

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 22/03/2013 20:03

I used the Kotex and always night time ones.

Standard boots ones were fine. Found them near the bf shelf.

I changed them every hour or so during the day because of open wounds etc so absorbency didn't matter until well after the bleeding had slowed down and then I was more interested in cushioning.

I got 48-packs of the mothercare pads with wings this time and really liked them. The ones with aloe vera weren't worth the extra money though. I just added a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the normal ones.

Hey Guinea. I've got a mixture of Boots own brand pads leftover from DS from 4 years ago (£1.59 price tag!), a pack from Boots I bought last week and another pack of Sainsburys own brand I picked up today as they have got a third off baby stuff this week.

I hadn't thought about asking if some were better than others. I don't think I cared last time but perhaps I should have done more research Confused

I initially bought mine for around £4 a pack at mothercare and then wised up and bought equally good quality from the supermarkets - found in the baby food aisle with breast pads and cotton wool buds...
About 99p a pack and did the job perfectly.

Supermarket brands are fine. You get through quite a lot in the first couple of weeks. Don't be tempted to get normal sanitary towels - they've got all sorts of chemicals in them that shouldn't get near open tears/stitches.

Boots own brand were excellent

Boots brand, 99p. Don't be fooled by Mothercare!

Purplecatti · 23/03/2013 09:27

Sainsburys own brand and boots. They did the job

I think someone on mumsnet recommended tena lady pants for ultimate absorbancy.

space21 · 23/03/2013 18:02

My midwife has recommended tena. She has had 4 kids so I've bought some for this time round. They are HUGE!

Chocaholics · 23/03/2013 18:09

I used tena lady pads (DH got them as baby was early and hadn't sorted out a hospital bag for DC2) they are huge but weren't too uncomfortable and no leaks like when I used maternity pads like with DC1.

ThedementedPenguin · 23/03/2013 18:11

I used tescos. Own brand was only a pound for 10.

Very good and would recommend to everyone.

Arithmeticulous · 23/03/2013 18:28

Tenalady pants with supermarket maternity pads for first few days (and nights) as they are basically a nappy and last 3-4 pad changes. Thereafter something thick with wings, and always nighttime at night once the tenaladies got too much.

space21 · 23/03/2013 19:40

Are the tena lady pants just knickers with a pad incorporated?

Arithmeticulous · 23/03/2013 19:43

More padded knickers than knickers with a pad. A revelation.

Beatrixpotty · 23/03/2013 19:59

Another vote for Boots..do thick & slimline but for 1st week slimline ones weren't thick enough

datedthedevil · 23/03/2013 20:23

I agree about tena ladies. I tried Asda and boots and def def preferred the tena ladies. They were especially appreciated when I didn't make it to the bathroom in time Hmm

StarsAboveYou · 23/03/2013 22:38

I used the hospital ones initially (very thick and cushioned) and then later switched to tesco ultra thin once the bleeding had calmed down. Although I don't think absorbency would have been an issue anyway as I changed them regularly to avoid my stiches becoming infected.

Babybluegiraffe · 23/03/2013 22:55

Sainsbo's are good - ninety something pence for ten, and reassuringly padded Grin

AmandaCooper · 25/03/2013 11:14

Tena are fantastic. I sent DH to the shop for more pads and he came back with Tena and they were brilliant!
