Anyone go into labour before elective c-section?

Asking out of interest...

I'm due to get my date next week and so I keep thinking that this will be the baby's birthday. I'm getting very uncomfortable though with sharp pains and wondering if the baby will try to put in an appearance before we get to 39 weeks.

I'm 36 weeks with number 2. First was 9 days late.

My friend did. At 38 weeks-ish. It's not a problem. They still did the cs. She said the labour pains made her even more glad she was having the cs.

I had an elective, had date for 39 weeks, had everything planned, hairdo, shopping etc, but DS decided to come of his own accord exactly two weeks before that. My waters broke one evening, I rang the hospital and they said to come straight in. Even though my waters had broken I didn't start having contractions, so they re-scheduled the section for the next morning. In a way I'm quite pleased, as I still had the 'surprise' element. Good Luck

It would be good to have the surprise (especially as I wanted a homebirth but have been advised not to), it's just that I feel that the date (when I get it) is somehow fixed in stone. I know this is a mistake but it is difficult not to think that this is when the baby will be born.

DH in the meantime has an overseas trip planned before the 39 weeks. Might need a rethink...

DD arrived exactly two weeks before the planned 39 week section. So I had a five hour labour while I waited for the theatre to be available. They come when they want to!

I was supposed to have an elective section with dd2 at 38 weeks (breech), but i went into labour at 34 weeks. They discovered that she had turned and was head down so told me i could try for a natural delivery (previous section) but then 2 hours later i hadn't progressed at all and baby was in distress so i had a not very emergency section.

Been having a funny feeling that this baby will come earlier. Don't know if it's because it's my second and so everything seems to be happening earlier/ more intense this time round but from everyone's replies it does seem to be a date to be taken with a pinch of salt. A bit like a due date then!

It looks like DH won't be going away now - hurrah! Just need to get my bags packed and then I'm sorted.

I think i knew that dd2 was going to be early, don't know how though, I just felt funny, very uncomfortable and had lots of braxton hicks.

I went into labour with ds2 eight days before my scheduled c-section which was organised for just over 38 weeks. ds2 was born at 37 weeks.

Hi Evanmom My ds has same name (don't know why I'm so excited except it's quite rare in England). But had to change name as posted too much personal stuff while recommending MN to people who know me Messages are old now so don't think this will give it away though!

Bloss - there is no reason why you shouldn't have a C/S on or after your due date. Whether a third baby would follow the pattern of the last or not cannot be predicted. They all decide to come in their own time. You could go early or you could go 2 weeks late!
The date is usually set earlier to avoid labour because the plan has been made for an elective C/S and doctors then assume women will not want to experience labour at all.
The risk of uterine rupture is minute for someone who goes into labour with previous C/S unless labour is forced by a syntoninon drip.
This decision is something you have control over. You just tell the consultant what you want and why. I am sure he will agree to your request.
By the way, a woman I work with went into labour prior to her planned C/S (she had 2 previous C/S).
It just means they get you to theatre faster. No hanging about

Gem13 · 24/01/2004 12:57

mears - that's really interesting. One of my concerns about the c-section is that as it is going to be at 39 weeks, will the baby be ready?

DS (9 days late) was a vaginal birth, pretty stressful (for me) but he arrived weighing in at 9'11 and fed and slept really well straight away. It was as if he knew what to do and he's continued to be a fantastic sleeper and eater.

Of course, the next baby could be a completely different personality but I don't want to have a fractious, fussy one because it has been 'sprung' early.

Will discuss the date with the consultant.

Following an emergency section the first time round, the second time I decided try VBAC but made the decision not to be induced should the baby be late. I went to the hospital for a check at 38 weeks and booked a date after my due date for an elective. Got home, went to bed and woke up at 1am the next morning when my waters broke. Called the hospital and was told to go straight in. When I arrived they had assumed I'd be having a section immediatly as they hadn't read my notes properly and just saw the section that had been booked the previous day. They were all ready to take me into theatre, but I think that's because it was the middle of the night and not very busy. Ended up with a section anyway as DS got distressed. I had a very strong feeling that he was going to make an early appearance so it wasn't too much of a suprise that he turned up when he did.

Hi Gem13, my third son, was due for a c-section, we booked a date for 38weeks, but he decided he would come at 34weeks. I am a diabetic, both my older sons were c-sections, I went into labour, did not even realise I was in labour, as my baby had a heart condition, I could not feel much, and when he came out he was blue. The only difference by being in labour is that if you are having the epidural or spinal is that you must stay still, which is a little difficult, when you are having contractions.
