A hospital in Ireland made an emergency application today to the High Court to compel a pregnant woman to undergo a caesarean section

Well they would have had to discuss that if it had made it into court Red but really only as a preliminary issue. If the hospital aren't claiming that she's mentally incompetent then that's that. I don't think it's really an issue of competence. What they are claiming in effect is that she's putting her right to refuse treatment above the life of her foetus. I have no doubt she's not consciously doing that but it is possible to be mentally competent yet make incredibly unwise decisions that put your life and those of your loved ones at risk. She may well be doing that. But if she is then that is her right. That should be the bottom line.

This was the uk until the 1980s, forced c sections, although usually after declaring the woman to be incapable of giving consent. After all, there is a kind of logic. She doesn't agree with what we think is best, therefore she must be mad.

Its 2013 though now mercibucket. And Ireland is signed up to the EU with human rights laws which date after that. I don't know how they still can do this.

This is one of the things that has really benefitted us in the UK and it really annoys me when the EU is so derided here.
